London parents- if I have a private insurance (Bupa global), is there a reason not to give birth at a private hospital? Let’s say one that has NHS facilities in it as well?

Does your insurance actually cover private maternity/birth? Most don’t as it’s not an illness. I personally wouldn’t use private for anything like maternity as the private hospitals in the U.K. are not resourced/equipped for any complications in childbirth.

like

Bupa Global does cover it, mine was also up to £20k. Not sure if it varies by company plan

Yes, we just did this and considered lindo/Uchl and Portland. We went with Portland and care was amazing. Consider if low risk.

There is no reason not to do it. I don't know why people go on about private hospitals especially when OP said literally in the OP they were considering a private wing of a large London NHS hospital!

I've given birth at C&W in the NHS (first baby) then their private Kensington wing (second). It's a nicer experience all around, particularly for after the birth. Baby would be wheeled down a corridor to the exact same NICU as the public wing. Public maternity wing, private wing and NICU are all on the same floor.

Fwiw I also had no issues with the medical care on the NHS either but if your insurance covers the nicer facilities/experience anyway there's no reason to not take it up.

like

Thank you!

I'd only consider it for a low-risk pregnancy and would want to discuss what the process would be should things go wrong. Private hospitals are rarely equipped for proper complications so I'd want to be confident that I could quickly get the right care.

Has anyone been successful in negotiating the schedule on a global pregnancy bill? My provider won't bill by visit and split the global cost into four payments all due by the 28th week. I don't understand how that's legal since it is so off the calendar of services and crosses calendar years (and insurance coverage), where most costs are incurred at the end of pregnancy with increased visit frequency and delivery.
