Looking for advice: current senior associate at a mid-size firm and was just offered a role as "counsel" in big law. Salary for the new position is not on the lockstep scale (and, in fact, significantly below where I would fall if I was placed on the lockstep scale). Take it or no?

If it will not help you achieve either your long-term or short-term financial goals, I would not take it. I’d wait for an associate position that is lock-step. If you’re hesitating about taking it now, when the workload comes, and it will come, you will prob get annoyed.

What are the hours requirements in new gig compared with what you’re currently pulling?

like

Why is the salary not lockstep? Did they provide you with any background on that?

like

Depends on the firm - not a good sign if the comp is already below lock step for the equivalent associate year. Agree with above where it breeds discontent quickly if your workload is on par with or over associates with higher comp. Additionally, certain firms have a negative internal view of the counsel position, so that is something to take into account.

In my offer letter, nothing is mentioned about variable pay, but the recruiter had mentioned to me about 0-12% variable. Am I missing anything. Do they have any variable component in the salary or not.

Most likely getting fired, tips on how to find a job ASAP? I made a pretty big mistake that required supplemental filings with government offices to fix (missed some items when reviewing/comparing long lists of things across 20-30 years). It’s fixable and the client isn’t really getting hurt by this (worst case signing gets delayed), but my anxiety is telling me to prepare for the worst. Can I ask for extra time at the firm to find a new job (so I wasn’t “fired”)? Or should I go for severance?
