Absolutely upfront and clear about it and I tell every person I come in contact with. 5pm meetings should be avoided for everyone, not just parents btw.
Either my husband or I have to leave right at 5pm to pick up our son. I am always up front with my whole team letting them know I will be offline during that time. I can take a quick call during the drive over, but that’s about it. Everyone understands and I have never received any pushback.
You should 100% be upfront, and if your boss is not ok with it…I would start looking for a new job.
After bedtime, I am usually back online completing work from the day, and my boss sees all of that and appreciates it.
I have a repeat OOO block on my calendar from 5 pm - 6 pm every day since I tend to do my son’s daycare pickup in the afternoons. My boss and direct reports all know I’m out of pocket during that time and if team members schedule time during that window, I politely decline and let them know why the block is on. No one will advocate for you but you, so set your boundaries and keep them. Especially if you’re logging on after hours to finish up anything you may have left undone to run out for pickup. I have done the same for the past year and everyone has survived just fine.
You have to own it and not look back. And if your boss, your team or clients aren’t supportive, move on.
My daycare goes until 6 (PT) but my school age kiddo has a wonky schedule with mid-morning drop off and mid-afternoon pick up. I’m transparent and upfront with internal folks and clients as I get to a certain comfort level with them. If need be, I take calls from the car but so long as I am generally available other times and the work gets done, it hasn’t been an issue. Everyone has their own stuff (even if they don’t have kids) so open communication and boundary setting has served me well.
Anywhere from 4:30-5:20. I'm very honest about it and only get support from clients and colleagues.
I’m blocked from 5-8:30 as that’s family time. Everyone knows that I’m unavailable unless it’s an emergency and if then they will text me, but even then it’s been really rare and they’ve all been respectful. One kids school is done at 5:30 and the other at 6, so i usually pick one up at 5:05 and the other by 5:15.
I block my calendar too, starting at 5pm. I try to do the same for my colleagues without kids. Try having that conversation, and if your workplace doesn’t give you support, there are others who will. ❤️
I do drop offs so that my husband (who isn’t in agency world) can do pick ups between 5-6pm. That said, on the off days when I do need to pick up I decline meetings that interfere with my schedule. I’ll follow up with my colleagues or clients later that night or early the next day. Nothing is life or death!
I am offline 5-7:30 for family time. not apologetic about it. if I need to login later I will. we all put in our time, if your boss doesn’t appreciate you time to leave.
My daycare is open until 6, but I try to get him by about 5:15. I had my calendar blocked off from 4:30-5 to pump before he started daycare (my husband took leave after me) and kept that blocked for daycare pickup.
