Moving from a firm to IHC is humbling. I have no idea what’s going on or even how to access documents lol. How long does it take to get “comfortable”?

1-2 years sounds about right to me as well.

And everything is happening much much slower (both a blessing and a curse). Overall, I haven’t been happier, but colleagues have said it took them about 1.5 years to actually figure out who to contact for stuff and what different departments do. Am at a big bank and came from big law.

I’m in the same boat and feel totally lost! But it’s comforting to know that everyone on the in house legal team was once in this positin

Been in house over a year after 5+ years at a firm. TBH it's only gotten more challenging because the more trust people gain in you the more work you get and it's very easy to become completely overwhelmed. I'm still waiting for things to feel manageable but don't see that happening unless my team happens to hire more attorneys

I think you will start feeling “comfortable” at 6 months, but it does take years to truly adopt…

Really, really helps to have a good manager or mentor. Can't overstate how important this is. I'd prioritize building relationships.

But also yeah, takes at least a year. You'll start feeling way better after 3-6 months, though.

You guys don't get bored in 6 months?

Try again. Also, don't you have a DPA form to negotiate off of for the nth time 😂.

i did all my years in house, and im figuring it out too. we all are

I have been looking at the curriculums for Harvard Business School's Master of Business Administration and Harvard Extension School's Master's in Management. They both have the same requirements, generally speaking, including a field immersion course that serves as a capstone in the Master's in Management, which is fairly new. If I am not able to gain admission to Harvard Business School, but wanted a similar educational experience to become a consultant, should I attend Harvard Extension?

Has anyone ever posted a general marketing position? We have an open position on our marketing team but we are unsure what type of position to offer. We have a wide variety of needs but don’t necessarily need to have this future person have all these skills. For example we need someone with great copywriting skills and also need someone who is great at digital marketing. This person doesn’t necessarily need to have both skills but if they did great, but if only one, great too.

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

Would love some advice / thoughts. I went straight from law school to a corporate legal department in house for an asset manager. They like “home grown” talent and I “be worked hard and risen relatively quickly (AGC in 9 years). I work hard and get a lot of complicated deals done (structured products and private funds). I can’t shake certain people (in compliance department mainly) thinking I don’t have enough experience to do what I do because I didn’t come from a law firm. Any advice?

I applied to Microsoft and a recruiter reached out saying I’m being moved forward. I was asked to fill out a written questionnaire, which I submitted about a month ago. I’ve heard nothing since. My status online still says in review. Is it time to give up hope on this one?

For those working in house, how much “from scratch” document drafting are you doing vs. reviewing and revising “outside documents”. For example, if your company wants to enter into a joint venture company with another entity, are you drafting the company agreement “from scratch” or is it based on internal forms? Or are you getting outside counsel to do it?

For in-house counsel roles, does firm prestige matter? For example, would the fact that an applicant is from Sullivan & Cromwell vs, say, White & Case matter at all, or is it much more about experience/interview? Does it matter as much as law school credentials? Assuming a mid-level corporate associate seeking to go in-house.

Currently working on a three person team in a larger GC group. I lateraled from a different group that did not pay attorneys on an attorney scale. I’m stuck in my old pay scale but have gotten promotions and raises quickly with more on the horizon. A recruiter reached out with a new role for 2-2.5x more than I currently make doing something similar. I love my company and the people I work with but the money isn’t there. Is it worth trying to get a counter to stay if I get the bigger offer?

Would you (1) early on clearly state that you’re not open to relocation but that you would be open to visiting a big office once or twice a month; (2) not say anything now and wait to get an offer and ask for an exemption; or (3) something else?

Considering a move in-house to NBC Universal in any litigation role (though I’d really go to wherever there is a need, whether litigation or business affairs generally). Coming from 4th year law firm litigation experience in a variety of areas but mostly data breach, e-discovery, breach of K. Can anyone help me wrap my head around this post Series C start-up equity offer? It’s an IP director position, the the base is $170 with 10% bonus (both lower than I was expecting). There’s also an equity component: 0.15% of current fully diluted equity. This equates to about 30000 shares at a strike price of $2. They also indicate the preferred stock price is $6 and preferred stock equity is $188k (whatever that means). They are in the middle of a new financing and valuation round.
