Cool . London will feel like a bit of a home from home in many ways, but the longer you're here, the more you'll notice the differences. It's hard not to love it here. The people are - on the whole - lovely. And I'd argue that London in the summer is the best place in the world. It's alive like nowhere else.
Be prepared to drink more than you've ever drunk in your life. At first it'll seem crazy but you do get used to it.
The sense of history is an amazing thing. You can feel its past everywhere. The little side streets are endlessly fascinating. And it's such a beautiful city. Mostly.
Proximity to Europe means you can realistically be in one of many different cultures with a few hours. Weekend trips are entirely feasible.
The downsides are much the same as NYC's.
Be prepared
Do not expect to use black cabs like you do yellow cabs. You will go bankrupt they are 3x price . Use public transport which is generally better than NYC. Buses are actually good and some of the commutes are picturesque. There is no night subway except at weekends on restricted lines so night buses are your friends . There are good apps to see when they are due
Pick your neighborhood like you would in NYC. It makes a big difference in atmosphere BUT remember London is mainly low rise so is more spread out and choosing a neighborhood makes a huge difference to commute time .
Oh yeah and sometimes class is as big an issue as race is in NYC ...?!??! Lol
Plan a sunny vacation in another country (Spain etc is not far and very cheap ). It's the only way to guarantee hot weather . London, to me, is the most beautiful city in the world when the weather is good .....but it's gray A LOT
I’ll likely try to find a place around east London/Hackney.
I’m going to be working for the same company as I currently am. Helping establish a new office
Where are you moving from?
New York City
Other more practical things - where you live will dictate a lot of your experience of the city. There's massive variance in look, feel, and the people. What's your 'scene'?
What gig did you get? I've been thinking about exploring opportunities. Was the move easy?
Take the red pill
Thank you for all the great replies
East London and hackney is equivalent of Brooklyn . Artsy, young, creative, night life . Good choice
