Negative reinforcement doesn’t always encourage stopping bad habits. Sometimes it doubles down and just encourages hiding the mistakes.
I suggest something like a sticker reward chart. Over a week if they get a certain number of successes (regardless of how many accidents) they get a prize like ice cream or a small toy. Once you’ve had a week or two of success then the habit should continue. You can try 1 week reward then increase it to a reward every two or three weeks.
You try making it more entertaining? My eldest was a huge fan of aiming at Cheerios, we left a small cup on top of the toilet and he would throw in a few before peeing. Also for #2 we left some very short books by the toilet and he would flip the pages as he sat there.
Def don’t punish! No. 1 accidents are a complex phenomenon with many potential reasons.
If he gets more anxious about it, it’ll get worse. So play it as cool as you can and seek some professional advice.
Thanks. Yeah it’s definitely feeling like a complex situation. Really don’t want to give him any anxiety about it either.
