My commercial team has an opening, so considering asking to pivot from my corpsec role. I’m ok with the pay cut if it means becoming more well rounded = more exit opportunities. Feeling like a paper pusher in my current role with minimal impact. Would I be shooting myself in the foot? (2018 grad, but first in house gig with 3.5 years in) I know the commercial legal team well and respect the person I would report to.

Anecdotally, my understanding is that corpsec roles are kind of in house unicorns — highly paid, chill hours, predictable work and workflow. If you like the job, could you look for a higher title in a similar corpsec role at another org? I do agree being well-rounded is important, and better to get commercial experience now before you get too senior. So I don’t hate this idea if it gets you closer to your goal. Just figure out what your goal is — GC? Or lifelong corpsec?

I've always heard commercial is a tough practice area to get out of once you're in there - would that really be a helpful stepping stone for someone in OP's position if they want GC?

Why a pay cut? Usually when you move internally at same level you get a small bump.

I would still push to be senior counsel. You are not a junior lawyer, and commercial is not rocket science.

why not? sounds like a good move for you

Got another perm offer in a different industry for similar salary, but I might have to relocate and I'm concerned the work may involve translation instead of pure legal work.

I’m in big law and on the cusp of making the jump to in-house. It sounds like the company I just interviewed with is getting ready to make me an offer. It’s definitely going to be a pay cut coming from big law but I do get some nice equity in the company. Is the jump worth it? I’m so burnt out by big law and this seems like an awesome opportunity to help shape a newish company. Any tips on how to figure out if this is the right move for me?
