Rising Star
I used to go for a morning walk in my hometown and observed few things whenever I crossed by an I.P.S.'s, high court's public attorney and a Principal Director of Audit's government house.
The size of the house is almost equal to the open area around the house.
There are always 5-8 security personel (armed) deployed for their safety.
Two cars (Innova Crysta and Ciaz) along with a local police's safari escort always at the house.
Principal Director of Audit himself own an alto which just bites the dust.
Gardener, house help and a guard.
A driver.
Every year during Diwali, the houses are decorated as if there is some wedding.
These are the things I could notice from the outside and are of great value I believe. It is not easy afford such a massive house by ourselves. If you rent it out, a huge chunk of your salary goes away in just the rent. Then you have the house help, gardener, guard and driver. Two premium cars at your disposal and lots of security forces around. Not factoring in the fuel and maintenance is all free.
This is just one short glimpse of it.
I will tell you something more, I come from a place where Durga Puja is massively big, the crowd at the pandals is unimaginable. But whenever such a person shows up, the entire queue and crowd has to wait till they are done.
I know I earn 5x more than what their salary is, but was I able to compensate for the power with my salary?
It doesn't end there, for public issues, no matter what you earn if you are not in power, the police, local administration don't really take you seriously.
For them a phone call sorts out everything. I have seen this as well, when a road had to be constructed and the whole colony tried and failed.
Yes, people say all the powers come from colonial era and are not there anymore, but believe me, till the time there is hierarchy in the world, the powers would remain as is. Just take an instance of how employees are aware of what their managers might do to them due to the powers vested in them.
In short, yes money is something that is definitely not the driving factor for top tier or any, government job. But almost everything else is.
We should not compare jobs like Rail locomotive driver, peon, sub-inspector etc to IT jobs. Even in IT not every other job pays you dearly, you have to be in good places to get the handsome comparable salary.
All of the above could be the reasons why your father wants you to pursue for government jobs. He has seen it maybe, and definitely wants your good.
Having said that, I do personally wish to get something like that, and I would have no regrets.
You need to see both sides of the coin first before you decide what is heads and what is tails. If you ask people in a forum where 90% of us (or even more) are in IT, you would only get to know more and better about IT. I am not against IT job, I am just telling you the other side of the coin, which unfortunately no other comment has highlighted.
Good luck!
Everyone is entitled to their opinions but many don't even begin to understand the level of problem you will get to face,
Most important point which I am not even going to bullet because this should be a sufficient condition to deter anyone with common sense and basic understand of probability from considering government jobs because of the number of people who compete against you for the posts and the probability that you will get selected!!! It's usually 1:3000 or something in that range gets worser if you are a general candidate, why would you not spend that time to get yourself in a job that not only pays you more but also doesn't have a stiff competition. Just consider the amount of effort require here vs opting for something down below,
becoming a geologist or a botanist or a historian or an audio engineer or becoming one of the million other jobs that are not as saturated as a government job or a software engineering job or a doctor job. The more nonconventional the easier it is to get into.
1. People here predominantly seem to think that government jobs are respected, but don't understand that even grade A officers will need to respect IAS or IPS officers like a gardener does to grade A officers. Heirarchial structure work both ways. Not to mention what will happen if an elected representative decides to pay a visit saying he has promised something to the people and you have to ensure that those impossible promises are fullfiled, do you now how many times MLAs and MLCs have publicly humiliated government servents for not fulfilling promise their own promise? Calling such public servants anti people and turn the entire town against the person giving him sleepless nights?
2. You will deal with different types of people in an open setting unlike in corporate world were everything is at some level client-provider sort of relationship. Exchanges tend to be mellowed you will never encounter harsh disrespect. Worst thing you will be fired. In government jobs I have seen superiors question a persons upbringing, caste, where he eats only human food, if he has a father...you get the point and the gore of what you need to face.
3. You can be thrown in jail. Some positions have so much responsibility that if you mess something up you can be even wrongly indicted and thrown in jail, especially things that involve cash, some commission related jobs, this hardly happens in private companies unless you were accused of sexual harrassment which could also happen in government jobs equally.
4. You will need to have connections to survive, this is not a requirement it's a need, you will not be able to survive some issues like for eg., if you want to serve in your home state but unions keeps asking why you have not be shifted inspite of working in this location for so many years etc.,
5. Your relations will keep bothering you for favours and if it cannot be done you risk sometimes even losing that relationship. Some will hog your precious time.
6. Public complaints - these days people and governments are getting very serious and government are making sure that the public and government officials are working and giving their best. It's no longer like 1990s where you can wail away your time and no one questions. If you are pulled into a complaint then you will need to face the drums sometimes if the problem is huge then expect CBI raids and be ready to lose not just honor but mind and peace as well. Not to mention sting operations by local tv channels.
Well, any industry, any job if it's there in the market, and some people are working in it that means it can fetch money.
You can't compare government and private just in terms of money. Government and Private jobs both have merits and demerits.
If you want to easily fetch a job, Get a private job. You can even study after work hours. When you'll study then you'll find are you committed enough? Are you willing to give extra time to government preparation even after doing full time private job?
Don't compare yourself with anyone. You have your own skills. This is easy to say than to follow.
I'd just wish you all the best.
It the decision you make that'll impact your future. If you want to experiment with government preparation, you can also take a drop of a year and check out if you're willing to study for it.
All the best!
Better to join private sector and keep trying for Government job.Once you cleared the selection procedure of government and you have some years of private job experience you will be in a better position to take a call.
Pension milti to hai bhai. NPS me contribute kr do. Even central govt employees after 2003 don't get pensions but pf earlier and now nps
You get paid much higher in private jobs. If you invest that amount properly, you can have a systematic retirement plan in place which will give you pension post your retirement. Goverment is privatising everything and so there is no surity of job saftey in government jobs as well. Even if there is surity, the chances of promotion on basis of merit and salary increment and perks of government jobs can still not out do private jobs.
You are a big boy now. You don't have to listen to your dad.
Try writing some govt exam and see if you can get a job in pvt companies there will be problems like layoff.
Do what your heart tells you.
Do what your heart tells you to. It is right that after retirement, govt employees get a pension. It's sufficient enough to survive for daily living and not dig into your savings. Plus you have job security which will take you all the way to retirement. Private jobs, you can work hard and make more money faster and earn in lakhs of rupees with a few years of experience but after you are of no use to anyone, you go back to the rabbit hole with whatever savings you had and investments you did. Only if you work your entire working life will you have a sufficient corpus to get a sizeable pension from EPF. But mostly private company jobs fire old employees and no one hires them, so they are jobless or involuntarily retired by 50-55 yrs. So benefits are there both sides and disadvantages also. Which is why do what your heart says is right, because only your passion can take you somewhere and anywhere in life not your employer or your job.
My father did too. Infact, my parents made me choose civil engineering in first year but I soon realised that it was not for me. I changed to cs. Even after I got placed, they kept on telling me to prepare for govt job. But after the watched my progress, they realised that private job has its own benefits.
If you are sure that you can do well in private sector, then just ignore and prove it to them that you can earn well in IT too. At the end parents just want their children to have a good stable life
You are correct. Try to change your father's openion by showing real stats.
Take a good life insurance it will pay equal to pension
1) follow your passion. 2) arranged marriage and matrimony gives a clear indicator of govt vs IT jobs. Your father is also thinking like any other parents. Remember as a father will want his daughter to be married to person who has steady income and well settled. Govt jobs are also cahleenging. Remember how govt people worked during pandemic esp doctors. Nothing is easy be it Govt or it job.
It all depends on risk appetite...he is right in terms of stability..but it is very tough to crack good posts..salary will be less for low cadre unless you can loot people with bribes..
People here are all in IT and will say pvt job pays more..but they will not freelance or take contracts cause it is not "stable".. evryone will blabber something..you do what you can and ignore people
Please go for Govt job if you are looking for stability. Private sector keeps getting affected by market situations and does not provide stability.
But if you are really passionate and ready for every situation that may come your way good or bad then follow your passion. Remember it will be your decision only and don’t blame anyone else later

Sarkari mein jaana hai toh then go for banks, LIC, etc
If you want a government job you need to try only in the central government with Ssc CGL where you have a good future and benefits also and mainly pension depends on designation. also get only posting in this department where as IT ED NIA CPO NCB.these are never been get privatisation. These are best government organisations at present
