Yes, you should have 3 years experience before going into a Project Manager role. You haven't lived the life yet until then and understand all the nuances for being a "good project manager," too many younger people give PMs a bad name because they aren't ready for the role. Maybe consider a deputy or junior PM to learn under a more experienced professional as they can mentor you. Also yes, it is best to PM in roles in an industry you are experienced in, you can branch out further later. As a PM you salary depends on where you are located if NE US you can command $125k - $130k with 3 years experience. More rural areas maybe $80-$90k. A 10+ year veteran with PMP cert (if you don't have invest in getting it) and Scrum Master Cert can command $145k - $180k (depending on area and if you are a PM for IT. IT development gives you the biggest return on salary. Hope this helps.
Thank you! this was pretty helpful! The difference in salary for Junior PMs in UK is a lot. I understand they need 3 years experience in a PM role but often times, how do they expect experience when they are paying junior pms pennies.
Do you know of any notable PM cert? e.g I hear a lot of product school but I am not sure if its industry recognised.
