Bankrate says SF is almost 40% more expensive than Chicago. He’s not making much more of a raise. Unless he’s working at a prop trading firm it’s hard to beat apples logo on your resume.
I’d think long and hard about it. Leaving consulting maybe. In lieu of a tech job in Chicago, probably not.
Cupertino is nothing like Napa. Bay Area has millions of people and you can drive to SF easily from there to go on a concert or whatever you need from the city.
There's more to life than money. If your friend has roots in Chicago, has a social life there, enjoys the cultural features of the city, maybe is a fan of one of the teams, any of those things could be reason to stay. If he's gotten an offer, it seems he must have applied and gone through interviews, so the idea of going must have seemed acceptable at some point. In that case he might as well go, he could always return to Chicago and whatever he likes about it at some future point.
I wouldn’t move to SF even if they offered me 100% more. Chicago is a far superior city in every aspect
I live in Chicago and there is no dollar amount that would ever take me to SF
He should move.
Why did he apply to apple if he didn’t want to move?
Excellent “problem” to have 😆
If he doesn't want to move, he doesn't want to move. I have lived in 9 different cities, and the biggest factor to my overall quality of life has always been how happy I am in the place I am living. I wouldn't take an extra 40% to go somewhere I would be miserable.
I really like SV other than the housing prices. I would also look at other Apple campuses if that’s an option. (frequent visitor to SV from Atlanta)
They should go
Going from the fire to the fire. Both are expensive places to live. I would only do it from a career standpoint. Weather is better in Cupertino.
That 40% bump will be 10% or less by the time he pays the cost of living in CA.
Your friend should take some time. Make a list of pros & cons & figure out expenses and if hes gonna be good with the change from Chicago to Cupertino. The vibe in Cupertino i am betting is very different from Chicago as is the weather. As for family &friends ppl can travel to & from. He should do what he feels is best for him.
You don't get it. Who cares where his roots are, it time to grow up if he has a family or doesn't live by himself, he needs to take the raise in pay, and live. He can always take a long weekend or plan a visit s couple times a year I don't care if the company was on Mars
What if they find someone else or his division in Chicago closes then what. Take the money
Wealth is not all there is in life. I'm plenty grown up and would not take 40% to move to somewhere I didn't like.
He can go to the library and ask for a cost of living index. 40% sounds good, but it may be eaten up by higher rent, fuel, and taxes.
Did he apply for the job, or did an offer just come his way because of his current reputation in the field? Sounds like he is limiting himself/his career.
You've gotta be trolling with this post
#1 He already said he doesn't want to move
#2 It's his decision not yours
#3 Why are you "asking for a friend" when his mind is already made up
What kind of role is it OP?
I wouldn’t do it
Your friend should ask/post this question :p
he should move if he has $2+ million for a house or $4500/month for rent. SV is more expensive than Chicago but the weather can’t be beat.
