Hey there!
I am a Masters Student majoring in Machine Learning. I am in my first semester and I am kind leaning to explore Data Science as well. Could any Professional Data Scientists help me out on getting started? What skills do I focus on? What kind of projects should I have on my portfolio?
I have tried looking this info out in the internet but its all overwhelming. Hoping to get some honest guidance here!

Haha the big 4 trick people into IT audit by calling advisory
I also got tricked into it risk advisory at deloitte. Luckily i was a working student and rejected the offer to stay on. I find it in bad taste how they conceal the real job description until you are hired. I did appreciate what i learned and the fact that i could discover it's not for me at a low cost.
OP, I'm in the valuation group. Happy to chat
Is risk and financial advisory just a fancy name for IT audit at Deliotte? If it is, man these firms are getting creative with the names these days. I just jumped from it audit to Fdd feel free to dm.
It's all of Advisory, just a fancy name
I would start looking now at what specific jobs you're wanting ("not risk" is way too broad, although I agree with the sentiment lol). For FDD, you're pretty much gonna need your CPA (it's not technically required, but for transfers/external hires that's an easy way for HR to filter out candidates).
Your choices are either to network at Deloitte and transfer in 1-2 years OR apply outside the firm. Both are difficult, as risk advisory experience is not valued at all outside internal audit jobs.
I'm leaving risk for FP&A but it has not been an easy switch at all. I recommend planning your exit now.
Agree, networking is 90%+ of the battle. I was extremely close to transferring to FDD that way but things went wrong when covid happened (plus other things in my office) and delayed me another year.
For external jobs, which is what I ultimately ended up doing, I had to sell them all my less-technical skills like the recent promotion, project mgmt, communication, etc. Then I leaned extremely heavily on big 4 background and CPA. You basically need to find a place that is okay with hiring more on potential vs. having the exact experience.
Feel free to PM me if you have more specific questions.
What firm are you with?
Big four audit -> big four advisory -> TAS
