My only problem with the board is that a vast majority of students are not represented.
Your background is so pretty, how did you do it? We’re having issues with parents wanting books removed from our shelves. Banning books.
Agree esat1- parents who have their own prejudices and biases want to control every aspect of their child’s life. I don’t know any school library or teacher syllabus that includes pornography- that’s just paranoia.
Gorgeous!! And so inspiring to those students who are considering their identities.
Sadly, there have been parents trying to get rid of those kinds of inclusive books in my area, too, but fortunately I believe most of the schools are remaining firm. If you make them forbidden, 1) It's going to entice students even more, and 2) It's going to make some students and adults feel unwelcome and wrong.
More politics on your wall include:
"Freedom of movement" is a "human right." I suppose the implication is that one ought to have the freedom to enter a country at his will. Countries have the duty of protecting their citizens. If they don't have a system to verify who enters and how, they can't know (as we've seen) who is entering and what harm they might cause. I don't have "freedom of movement" to "move" into my neighbor's house because it's bigger and more lavishly furnished.
"Protect Trans Kids." From whom? In my own school we're expected to protect them from their parents who might not support their trans behaviors. We ought to protect everyone from physical violence. Trans kids actually experience LESS physical violence than the general population. Violence against the trans community in general nearly always comes from engaging in behavior considered risky for any demographic.
Please be honest about what you hang for student viewing relative to your own political views. A single rainbow flag or BLM fist is a political statement whether you like it or not. If you deny that, you're lying or ignorant.
Bowl Leader
@OhioHS1, Why do you see complexion as a political hot button?
Ohio- go to the trump bowl!
Yes, it's absolutely political. "Black Lives Matter" is more than a statement of your opinion regarding black people. It's an organization that seeks to fundamentally transform the culture in favor a marxist, anti-family world-view. Adding the "trans" bit in tells every traditional Christian and Jew who sees your wall that their belief that God created man and woman in His image is an unwelcome belief in your library. You're gaslighting everyone when you say this isn't political.
California Elementary, are you really admitting your hatred for Christians and Jews? Kind of bigoted yourself, I know this is an Antiracist Educator's group, but that just doesn't seem right.
Not necessarily the staff, but I worry about the parents. Some of the parents I work with are fairly conservative
I'm conservative. You say that like it's a bad thing? Is there something wrong with parents or fellow staff having conservative values?
My, how dangerous it would be if a child had a conservative parent. We can't let that happen, can we?
What I've seen in my brief time on this forum is a microcosm of society at large. The obsessive need to speak in bumper stickers is a big part of the issue. In reading the exchanges here, there is a severe lack of listening is disturbing, given that we're supposed to be teachers. The "BLM" exchange is a perfect case in point.
For as often as I hear people individualize truth via their personal "lived experience," it sure seems like there is a concerted effort to destroy individualism. In just this thread alone, "inclusive" doesn't include Christians, Jews (anti-Semitic much?), conservatives, republican voters, and traditional parents. It seems that "inclusivity" is code for "ideological conformity."
