If they are getting the job done… who cares?
Yeah I have to look at it this way for now. It’s just so much socializing and breaks and late afternoons it’s giving off time management sirens. 🚨
But what’s the issue? Perhaps the great ideas come from socializing and interacting with others
If he’s salaried, what is the issue with him staying later (according to the clock)? He may be aware of his time loss throughout the day and stay longer to compensate.
And when you say he’s a millennial… how old is he? What type of experience does he have prior to coming to you?
This sounds like actually a great employee contributing to office culture and getting work done well.
I dont know your exact work environment, but it sounds like the only potential real issue is not staying within a designated space. Ask yourself, is it absolutely necessary for his role to be in the designated space? Many office roles are done fully remotely, but perhaps its different for this role if theres medical observations involved or something. If he truly needs to be in the designated space as part of his job duties then you could fairly give this feedback.
Time management - as an example my husband has poor time management skills but he overcompensates by producing high quality work and putting in the extra effort and late hours. Not the best for his personal time, but hes a valued and well-respected employee at his company. He has ADD but doesnt want to use and become dependent on medication, and it seems to be all related to his time management situation. Your employee could be in a similar situation and be overcompensating for his ADD. Saying this as a suggestion for a sympathetic approach.
What is the issue?
You need to have clarity on that
Too much socializing and not getting work done inside work hours. Its giving flaky and distractable.
