I’ve moved both internationally and cross country, total of about 5 times. My advice is that the perfect moment will never arrive, you just need to go for it.
This is a great point, and helping to motivate me to go for it!
I love the SW / Utah / Arizona. If work or any other responsibilities isn’t holding you back then 100% do it. If it doesn’t turn out to the wonderland you hoped for, you’ve the option to pack bags again and come to NJ!
It really is beautiful! So many national parks and gorgeous landscapes. Plus it’s a great gateway to the rest of the west. Maybe we’ll leave tonight lol
My last move was on my own with no relocation and I’d recommend that you get rid of/sell as many big items as possible to reduce what you need to bring and find a long weekend to try and move or at least minimize the number of days you need to take off. I spent $180 to get a tow hitch added to my car and pulled a trailer, which was much less than renting a van but that will just depend on how much stuff you had. I had about a 26 hour drive that I split into 3 segments and found hotels using things like deal sites to find okayish hotels for as cheap as I could. I spent somewhere around $1k:
$180 for tow hitch
$300 for trailer rental
$250 on hotels
$100 in gas
This is definitely something we are considering. 2 years ago, one of our family members used movers to relocated 500 miles with 3bdrm, 3bath+ furnishings. It was upwards of $15,000. Which is insane, IMO. My spouse and I have discussed the option of letting go (sell and donate) most of our belongings and flying out. Maybe shipping a few things. We do have a few cool vintage pieces that I’d love to keep though.
