My wife and make significantly more (nominally) than our parents did at our age. Her in big law and me in big 4 consulting- we have no debt, we invest my entire paycheck, have ~1 year emergency fund, max 401ks… basically we have done everything right when it comes to personal finances.

And yet we can’t afford a house in the same neighborhoods that we were raised in.

Very frustrating.

If you are a B4 manager and are saving your entire salary, how can you not afford a house where you were raised? If you make $150k. That’s $12k/month. What house did your parents buy 25 years that you couldn’t buy today for $12k/month. My two nephews graduated from college in 2022 and 2023 and both bought houses already (with spouses of similar ages) in LCL city and they have regular non-elite type jobs.

Thirty years ago $500-600k in Chicago was a very expensive house. Your parents made good money at that time to afford that house.

like

I hear you but $500-$600k in the ‘90s in Chicago is still a pretty fancy house. Way above the typical house price. My parents bought a 2000 sqft place in NYC for $300K around the same time that would also today stretch beyond our budget and require jobs far fancier than theirs (neighborhood sole practitioner lawyer and HS teacher).

Hi folks,

I have 9 years of experience as a QA out of which last 2-3 is an individual contributor (sole qa owner) plus team lead of a qa team.. I want to pursue masters in the UK so I can have a role like Project Manager/Test Manager/Scrum Master in the future.. what course should I go for:
1. MSc Management
2. Business Analysis and Consulting
3. MBA (not so easy as I don't want to give GMAT, will select certain colleges that do not need GMAT score)

Finally got my hands on one. I was expecting it to feel much cheaper than it does. Definitely still get the quality feel that Swatch is known for. The weight is nothing like a real speedy, but still looks great imo. I went with the Mission to Pluto as I didn’t want one that looks too much like the real thing, and the Mars/Sun versions had the gauche white strap imo. Overall pleased for $260.

I spent the last 3 months "growing up" & now I'm ready to go. 1st thing is for me to get my own place. I'd like to buy instead of rent because I don't want to pay someone else's mortgage.

I'm thinking of selling my car & cash out some of my 401k to buy a house. My thought is to put down 3.5% for a FHA loan then make a big payment towards the principal to reduce long-term interest.

Anything wrong with this thinking or anything else I should consider?

Currently maxed Roth 401k, Roth IRA, HSA, and ESPP at 23 YO, should I consider an after-tax conversion? I’ve read about back-door Roths but I’m still far below the income limit as an analyst. Definitely looking into early-ish retirement, should I just invest the rest in a regular brokerage account until I reach the income limit? Am I even allowed to do a conversion? Any advice is helpful :)
