Need some advice on how to handle an employee who is paranoid and difficult to get through to. I run a lovely small female-majority team, everyone gets along. A newish hire who is experienced and relatively senior in title is causing friction by being paranoid that others think she's not doing her job and takes everything personally. I don't know where she got this idea from. I watch closely and try to see it from her POV. Struggling as she shuts me down when I try to talk to her about it.

She might have come from a toxic place before that has given her that mindset. Best advice is to support, but know you can’t be the one to fully change their way of thinking. Maybe asking what is going well and what things feel off? Similar questions could hopefully get them to understand nobody is out to get her. The really unfortunate thing is shutting down everytime, which makes it harder when you just want to help.

That's a strange thing to have to deal with, but it probably does have roots in her career. It's likely she worked in some places with real hardball office politics. And she still thinks everyone is a potential Machiavelli. I'm not sure what you can do about it beyond asking her about her accusations and establishing that they're baseless. At some point you may have to admit she's just not worth the time spent dealing with her issues.

My manager basically gave me an unlimited budget to get whatever certifications I want. My career profile is similar to a Solution Architect- what should I get? I am thinking about Okta (I do some SAML work), Domo, ITIL, Six Sigma, Certified Scrum Product Owner, Six Sigma, anything else? I have AWS Cloud Practitioner already. I am hoping to pivot to Product Management or Data Science.

Hi everyone!

After years of hard work, I just got my first position in a leadership role! Yay! I’ll be leading a team of 12.
I wanted to know if you had any tips for me, things you wish you knew before, or things previous leaders did for/to you that you found admirable or stayed with you. I want to make sure I’m there for them and want to be a leader they will remember positively.

Thank you so much!!

"Everybody can be a leader" some say... "Leaders are nurtured not born" say others... True.

But... this is also true: "not everybody wants to be a leader" (whether they can or can't be). It is a fairly common practice in organizations with traditional career management structures for people to "be promoted" into leadership roles as the "end steps of the corporate ladder" that was climbed doing technical work. And, unfortunately, this doesn't work all the time

I had a great review and a 5.5% raise and a great bonus at my company. But I also got a new Director and a peer manager of mine left the company, so I will be absorbing her team. In addition, my director said I will be receiving 'deep delegation' from them. I don't mind more work, but deep delegation is a new term I've never heard. What does that mean lol?

Our annual reviews are approaching & one of my direct reports has been with us for almost six years w/ little growth. My reco was to let him go & find a stronger, hungrier & more motivated designer at the same level. However, my boss instead wants us to promote him in hopes that will spark some motivation. I am not behind this decision & have voiced my multitude of concerns in promoting an employee who doesn't deserve it. HR is behind the decision! Thoughts on promoting an undeserving report?
