Never mind having actual skills: according to "Personal Brand Manager", what really matters in your career is the way you phrase things. Just remember to talk to people like they're too stupid to see through your facade.

He has a point on some of these. Phrasing is key, poor phrasing can make you lose credibility and devalue your “brand”. It’s a perception game. Think about handshakes and your perception of someone who barely grasps your hand or gives you their fingers to shake…so awkward.

I mean you have to be aware of who you're talking to but the post is about people you manage. My boss often leans toward the more sympathetic phrasings out of mutual respect but not at the expense of getting her point across and I have no doubt if I tried to "bulldoze" her I'd be put in my place. I guess I won't take that kind of respectful workplace culture for granted anymore after reading these replies.

I’m with EY1 on this. The point is to phrase your communications and handle the little things well so politics and perception don’t get in the way of you doing your actual job and skillset—that you presumably are good at

Probably the best piece of career advice anyone has ever given, and you didn’t even mean it

No cringe here

Venting a bit: Are you finding DEI groups at work overrun with allies. Is there also an increase in celebrating said allies? Is it just me?

Most of the groups I'm in (esp. event teams) are being taken over by allies wanting to do what they think should be done to 'celebrate' whatever topic the month is, usually speaking over marginalized coworkers and rarely consulting with them. It seems like the only time this doesn't happen is for gay (usually yt) men or BHM. I'm just feeling so...minimized.

There really is such a direct correlation between cringey title and cringey posts.

Before LinkedIn...to me, the king of professional cringey was Shingy. Do you guys remember him? He was aol's overpaid "digital prophet" and got paid to visit companies at lunchtime and babble the same kind of nonsense we now call "LinkedIn cringe".

Does anyone think it’s a good idea to beg for a job and put your personal life out there to get sympathy, because that is what I am seeing every day on LinkedIn and then the recruiters and everybody will comment and send the jobs and they will end up with a job or interview the next day.
I’m getting close to the point of doing that because it seems like it is working.

This is the very definition of privilege

Able to post something so absurdly wrong (Google PMs in the comments explaining that she transferred ladders when she switched jobs internally, hence pay change)

Able to become a product manager at Google and STILL not comprehend how misleading the race aggregation stat is “Black women make 58 cents to every $1 a white man makes!” not taking into account job choice and individual opportunity.

..all while the comments are filled with blind support

on the way to an interview this morning eating a sandwich. I walked past a homeless man who had a stray cat perched on his lap. He asked for a bite of sandwich to feed them both as they hadn’t eaten in days. I gave the whole sandwich over and headed off to the interview. As I got to the interview room there was a large executive chair facing away from me. The chair turned and on top was a mirror. When looking in the mirror I could see the cat. I am the cat. Truly inspirational when you work hard
