I think you have observed that correctly. I have a whole Unified Theory about this—that in the age of ad agencies not producing, yknow, ads (where traditionally we profit from markups etc), the new revenue stream is just billable hours on TALKING ABOUT work we COULD make.
Hence, the Strategist.
The product of a traditional agency is ads. The product of the new agency is decks and meetings. So creatives are a small part of the process, expensive, and worst of all they whine constantly about how they never get to make anything. Get rid of them (esp the ones over 40) and replace them with “Junior Strategists” and client-facing account folks. Decks and meetings and “insights” (that come close but never quiiite get acted on) galore.
Everything makes sense now, thank you.
And to answer OP’s question: yes, run.
I saw the exact thing happen at my last agency. After about a year without improvement or creative work worth of mention coming out of the agency, I left.
While I think your unified theory of everything has a smidge of 42 to it, FH may not be the poster child for the case you make. For one thing, they’re a PR and digital shop, first and foremost—in their own words)— also happens to do advertising, some of that at scale. And given that a reported 90% of digital growth is going to two companies, neither of them ad agencies, prospects aren’t exactly rosy. That said FH OP, you might want to see where things go—could be silver pixels in the cutbacks. For sure, as BBDO1’s post underscore, grass not necessarily greener in ad-first agency-land either.
It’s true, I dont know what FH is. I just like running my mouth about my theory to whoever will listen.
I also dont know what 42 is, what’s that?
Not to blather in about this, but sometimes I think I made wrong choices about wanting to be invested in creative, vs service—some big bank accounts came out traditional who said “whatever makes you happy” instead “what makes you famous.” I just could never get it up to be a part of that club.
