Once you've built up a reputation as someone who does shoddy/crappy work --- how do you go about gaining trust again? Or do you ever?

Switch groups or firms. It’s really hard to shake a bad rep.

All the above responses share one thing in common - it’s their fault not yours.

Here’s another take. Try to put yourself in your manager’s position. Effectively do their job for them. And communicate. Once a manager feels like his/her to-do list is shrinking because of you, you’re golden. And once you have people working for you, you’ll feel the same way. Everyone just wants to go home. Help someone achieve that and you’ll be rewarded. Easy. As. That.

Be proactive. Ask your managers what you can do to help lighten their load. If they still give you shit, then it’s really them, not you.

Try switching departments first, and if you still have a reputation. Then switch to another firm or try industry

I disagree with the first comments. Our view changes from time to time. Once you show dedication to your work/task people will be aware of that

Why do you feel your work is crappy? Have you been told so or is that how you think you are percieved or you have a fair inkling based on people's behavior. It's a big difference, we tend to be hard on ourselves. The get out of the firm or practice is the easiest way out but what's to say that you may not meet someone's expectations in your entire career - I say happens to almost everyone at some point.

If you see yourself at EY in the longer term, I advice that you start working on building that level of trust again. It's not going to be easy. I was in your shoes but I stepped up my game. When I realized that there was still a bias from my prior engagements, I went up to my practice leader and had a conversation about how I understood that I had fallen short of where I needed to be in my prior experiences, what was the root cause (I would not blame others, but rather present a factual analysis), what specific steps I had taken to overcome it, and how I did that (worked with quality focused PPEDs, regional quality team etc.). Then I bluntly asked that I would like a second chance to prove myself. Most leaders will agree that people deserve a second chance. That's when you hit the ball out of the park - in quality and in operations. Do not forget the operations part; it won't matter how good the quality is if you can't manage the engagement. Also I agree with TM1, that is good advice.

Good luck! Make a strong come back.

Once you've got a bad rep it's game over at that firm.

Agree with EY2. I think you need to seek feedback and understand what it is you have been doing wrong in the past and suggestions on how you can improve or what the expectation is (bonus points if you suggest how you think you can improve). For example, not processing all review comments in a report. Proposed solution, print it off and highlight each comment as you make the change and seek clarification on any review comments to don’t understand. You could also Work out who the people in your team are that are considered great at coaching and build a relationship with them to get their help to improve. If you are really concerned, speak to your PM/coach.. nobody wants you to fail. While we are all replaceable, it still costs more to hire a newbie. But def get regular feedback, during and after and aim to show a record of improvement over time. It’s not necessarily an overnight fix. Good luck!

^ just to add.. from another angle.. if you have a reputation for shoddy work... it could be that you are getting crap coaching... and don’t understand what you should be doing and the person saying you have done shoddy work should actually take a good hard look at themselves.. we’re not mind readers, we all need a little help and guidance from time to time - and at some times more guidance than others. Food for thought!

Man I wish I could be wrong about this but in my experience, once that reputation of shoddy work is set, I have never seen the impression reverse. Maybe it’s self-fulfilling but sadly, I can name the last 5 staff who gave me that impression and all were gone within 2 years

EY3 - and they were all staff 1s?
