Would you rather have a staff ask permission to update something or go ahead and do it without mentioning it?

As a staff asking is fine. They are trying to do the right thing. Don’t fault them for that.

Definitely depends on what something is...

Depends on staff

like

If I'm crazy busy, I genuinely appreciate it when Staff take the initiative on their own. Granted, there is a sliding scale of relative importance / competence. If they are incompetent, I'll coach them right to the curb.

like

You should update it if it needs to be updated, and then tell your senior/manager that you updated it.

like

Just do it

like

Guess it depends on your work. For me, I've got a staff that will ask me stupid shit 15 times a day. Each disruption adds up.

like

Do it, and tell me. I hate hand holding.

All does it really set you back that much time or energy if they ask you if you want something updated? It should be a yes or no answer and take about 5 seconds of conversation. Then the staff is clear and you know it is being done. But if you didn’t want it updated it would likely take longer to fix it then it took to ask. I don’t see that as handholding. That would be the staff asking your help to update it. That is different.

EY4 - yes that is different. OP’s Question was posed a one off. Your staff needs coaching and 15 times a day becomes hand holding.

Depends. If it's a deliverable or something else going to a client, they should ask or at least discuss before making changes.

Worked with an agent on my first deal, great. Second deal now and I’m getting my license myself. I’d like to use her as a backboard for ideas and don’t mind giving her a “finders fee” or something but would like to capture the commissions myself. What would be the normal way to have this convo?

Left PA and started industry remotely. Haven’t been in the office. Met my team one time. Tips are to always be on video for even the smallest of calls. Take a ridiculous amount of notes. In downtime, go through your notes and come up with questions by reperforming old work. Set up recurring question sessions with your team so you know what to do next time. Set up performance meetings even monthly because it’s hard to get a gauge on your performance

Lot of debate whether CNN’s Jeff Zucker was over-penalized. Baffles me when media folks defend their own when the simple and simplest organizational rule…you can’t sleep with someone you supervise, is being violated.

Working for a senior who is beyond horrible. She talks to you like you’re stupid and makes it sound like you’re absolutely terrible at what you’re doing. She’s made 5 other associates cry during her 5 year career. Got someone fired and made another person quit. It’s known around the office that she can no longer have a female associate, because she talks down to females more than she does males. I came along and thought I could deal with it but she literally makes me want to not log on tomorrow.

My natural instinct is to assume rejection if I have conflict with a partner or don’t think my feelings are reciprocated. I’ll try to bring it up with them, but I’ll say “if you want to end this feel free” so it doesn’t hurt me (and they can say what they really mean instead of sugarcoating). Someone told me today that they just assume I’m not interested because I always seem to “run” but I’m not sure how to bring up problems/feelings otherwise. How do you approach these hard questions?

I posted this somewhere else before I remembered that I am in this bowl :) so, I changed jobs 6-7 months ago and I am realizing it is not a good fit. Leadership seem to not want to hear the truth so people tell them what they want to hear and if you don’t middle management gets pissed at you. I am seriously thinking about looking somewhere else. My question is how do you answer the “why are you looking to leave” question without bad mouthing your current company?

Need advice & perspectives: I got a verbal review from my manager saying he couldn’t see me as senior cuz I didn’t follow the design doc format he mandates from all designers. While I have been the only designer who does almost everything from design, UI asset creation, wiring up UI in Unity (I am in mobile gaming).
Also the product I’m on has been in MVP stage, things move extremely fast and design decisions changed constantly. He’s not on my team.
Am I crazy for thinking him a bad manager?

Do you think resume past behaviour is really a predator for future behaviour ? To me there has to be more psychological statistic on this to ring true as all work variable differ for each workplace, including performance expectations, tasks and evaluations.

I'm lateraling to another firm because frankly I think the management of this one is terrible, but the people (and individual partners) I actually work with are awesome. I've only been here for about 18 months, so I imagine that short time frame will make it extra awkward 😬

I started working for a new law firm, much larger than the firm I was working for previously. The main attorney that I work under had noticed some mistakes I was making (I am a NY paralegal who took this position with the understanding that they’d be teaching me NJ and NYC real estate). Anyways, the attorney decided to tell the HR manager about the mistakes I had been making. Rather than HR discussing with me, the manager told my dramatic coworker to tell me..how should I handle this? Very hurt!
