Our team has a goal to mentor others across the agency no matter your role, team, or seniority. We believe everyone has something valuable to share.

Have you ever taken time in your career to mentor someone (formally or informally)? What did it look like for you? And do you think those around you could benefit from what you’ve learned along the way?

I think the best mentors are those who make you feel seen and supported. Who has been that person for you in your career?

I was never in a formal mentorship program, but what I tried to do was scout out people in the department who seemed to know what they were doing and I'd try to learn from them. I just considered learning to be better at the job a big part of the job, and I knew that sitting around waiting for training wouldn't really do it. What I discovered was that some people will be quite generous with insights and info if you ask good and relevant questions.

That is such a great goal. I’ve never mentored anyone, but would love to at some point. Definitely agree we can all learn from each other, no matter where we are in our careers.

I do my best to mentor everyone who works for me. Thankfully, I have lots of resources at my disposal to help anyone going through a hard time, or encourage those who need extra guidance.

I had not mentor anyone but would be willing to do so henceforth.

My partner got a City of Toronto offer. Salary band is 104-121k. HR asked for his expectations and he said 115k. HR came back with a 106k offer stating nobody on the team makes that much so they cant offer it. Also said she is unsure if there is any wiggle room if any at all. I’ve looked at everyone on the team with the same titles salary on the sunshine list and the lowest I see is 121k. I assume there is an OT component of some sort but also can’t confirm. Thoughts? /negotiating advice?

I feel under qualified at work but I also don’t know how much of it is in my head or in reality. I head a team and they seem to be happy… but I’m also personally not satisfied what we’re delivering is enough… so I have this weird mixed feeling of the stuff we’re doing not really being that stretching, but at the same time I feel out of my depth. I really don’t know what to do and whether to hold on in the hope I’ll learn something or go back to a lower grade and a more comfortable life.

Hi! Anybody knows of federal agencies hiring that are offering fulltime telework/remote?

I work through a contractor, and was hired 2yrs ago to be a Systems Test Engineer II. They decided last minute to make me a Software Content Manager, but kept my title as is since it was supposed to be a 6mo rotation. I’m still an SCM, and am taking on leadership roles in the group. How do I ask for a title change and pay increase to reflect what I actually do? Do I ask my contract house, or my NASA mgmt? Should I ask to make the pay retroactive since I was hired to do one thing, but do another?
