Can you be honest and say look, that's my minimum salary and not one I'm willing to move for. I'm sorry that number was given. Here's my starting point. (Along the lines of what SD1 said)
You know who's a dick? Not you!! Why wouldn't the recruiter check with you first?
Never give a range. Give a number at which, you're willing to move.
Whack move by the recruiter. This is why I stopped giving ranges. Give the number you want plus a 5k buffer. That way you can slash that off if they try to play hardball during negotiating.
C1 has the script, take it.
True. Your recruiter shouldn't be reaching out to anyone without asking you first.
I agree with C1. Reboot the conversation and apologize for the recruiter. Also, set ground rules with the recruiter so you don't have to have this happen again.
Was the recruiter clear you were giving a range? Perhaps your minimum of the range was the maximum of their hiring salary?
And yes, I would negotiate. Doesn't hurt to try.
Give a range that starts above your actual minimum.
Lol yes, unfortunately all true. Given that I'm currently in this situation, what should I do?
