I would probably list down all the benefits gained in a spreadsheet and quantify it as far as dollars worth. In addtion, are there any employer matching in retirement accounts etc of that nature. And compare it to your current 1099 salary and other things that you can quantify. I’ve never been a 1099 but if you are paying yourself through your LLC, then you can contribute more to retirement accounts as a solo 401k (employer and employee contributions) limit is $69k which would help your investments a lot more than if you were a w-2 in my opinion. But it’d probably be partly a math equation plus depending on what your overall goal is in the future and aligning with your priorities.
Thank you for these considerations!
Separately, both companies Im doing the work for (not the agency itself) encouraged me to apply for an FTE position.
The benefits are bonus, equity, maternity leave, more PTO, things of that nature.
The con in my opinion is flexibility right now. As a contractor/freelancer I can do whatever I want as long as I get the work done. I also have an LLC where I get tax benefits.
My ultimate question: should I continue the life of being an independent contractor, or go for the full time position and climb up the corporate ladder?
Help, please :)
Ask to stay as a contractor
You’re killing it and your husband give you great benefits? Uhhh. Don’t over think this one. Once you go FT you’re locked in to one that one income source.
Main question, do you like doing the work or do you like being in charge? Do you like hitting a deadline or do you like to see if other have hit their deadline? Etc.
Mayyyybe best of both worlds? Try becoming an LLC then contract with the firms. Now you can try adding a staff member or two over the years. Hate managing people? Stop hiring and just focus on the work.
Thank you! These questions really help make me realize I don’t want to be the one managing 😂 even when I was an FTE I was always in a consultative role. At one point I was a team lead with 3 reports which wasn’t horrible, but… meh
I have a full-time job and I freelance on the side but this sounds way better as long as you get hubby's health benefits. I'd stick with it!
Those are very dynamic, personal variables, based on your lifestyle, what you want vs. what you think you need. Figure that out, and I’d love to hear what you discover. It’s all a dance.
Definitely a dance. My husband and I are very focused on paying off all of our debt including our home that we bought when interest rates were 2%. We should achieve our goals by June. Then, it’s time to start investing. So my gut certainly tells me for the short term, it makes sense to remain a contractor. I want to be sure I’m not missing out on anything and making the wrong choice from a long-term perspective.
you have to be patience on your duty. you reach any where you want.
It sounds like you are doing fine, but also keep in mind a contract worker has no job protections. I was out of work from April to August because my company had a cash crunch and they paused all contractors. I got by but it sucked. I am now looking at full time real jobs. They pay less but there is more security.
Nah, I’d never get tied down again. Doing my best to get off of W2 and over to my LLC.
Do you realllllly want to climb the corporate ladder? Do you want to put up with all the bs and politics? Bust your tail for an incredible raise of 8%! Your J2 is probably paying you just as good if not better than J1… which is like what… a 100% raise? Why not get a J3 for another 100% raise on top of J1?
What is 1099?
A 1099 employee is a contractor rather than a full-time employee. These employees may also be referred to as freelancers, self-employed workers, or independent contractors
