Same here! I think recruiters are poorly informed about hring manager preferences, and they may have quotas of people/resumes they source, so they may contact you despite you being unlikely to advance.
I have an industry focus and also specific functional areas of expertise, but what I described above often happens for F500 companies outside of my focus industry which initially say they are not looking for specialized experience but after initial interview, i will often get feedback like “HM liked your background but is looking for someone who has B2B software experience / biomedical background / digital transformation” etc etc (which I dont have any experience in, but recruiter already knew this

M1s response is the right one.
With this new market favoring employers, will happen more frequently. Lots of applicants and fewer jobs openings. 6 months ago might have gotten away with it.
Ya so treat it like a consulting project and read up the lingo from the industry to atleast sound like you know stuff

Yeah I’m a hiring manager and I definitely have to reject maybe 30%+ of the people that my recruiter finds. My recruiter is GREAT but he only knows so much.
It seems that you probably have a lot of the key words or key experiences that the recruiters have been told to look for, but once the hiring managers take a deeper look they realize that there are some additional experiences they need or they just have several others with more relevant experience.
How much are you focusing on networking and getting referrals? That’s how I pivoted industries (and honestly how I exited consulting), and is probably your best bet.
Thanks for the insights.
I have gotten referrals for several companies where I have connections, but honestly I can’t think of any referrals that actually resulted in an interview. I submitted apps with referral to Google, Meta, LinkedIn, Salesforce, but none of them worked out.
Interview invitations have mainly come from cold apps (about 20%) and recruiter initiated messages on linkedin (other 80%)

Also, the recruiters are incentivized to bring forth as many viable candidates as possible. It’s a numbers game.
Also facing this looking for SM/D corporate strategy roles in industry.
OP - Like you my pass rate with the recruiter/headhunter is 100%. Once at the HM, they always cite industry knowledge or lack of as the dinging factor. It isn't necessarily false so not much I can say....but as a guy in industrials....hard to find anything.

Facing this but much more junior. Desirable jobs still seem hard to get
How are you even getting interviews with lack of relevant experience?
It depends, what i am talking about here are 90% messages from recruiters. So they reach out to me first regarding some random sector opportunity, saying that my strategy consulting background is sufficient even if i dont have that sector experience. Then after meeting the team they often decide to not move forward
