It's a good problem to have!
One time, I was giving a presentation to a group of people. After I was finished, one of the men in the audience came up to me and said, "You're so young! I'm surprised you know so much about this topic." I was a little taken aback, but I smiled and said, "Thanks! I've been working in this field for a few years now, so I've had some time to learn a lot." The man was impressed by my knowledge and experience, and he ended up hiring me for a project.
So, don't let your age hold you back! If you're confident and you know your stuff, people will take you seriously.
Unfortunately, that may never change because you may always look younger than your contemporaries and there are likely other biases that may prevent you from receiving the full respect you deserve…. Continue to be professional and good luck.
Asian woman here, I feel your pain. Back in May I wore sweats out and my nail tech asked if I was getting my nails done for prom…
Same here too! I am 40 this year, but people think i am in my 20s, I was asked by someone if I am the new intern in the company. I used to be annoyed by that, but I am not being bothered any more now, as I know my stuff and I am giving good legal advice. And I am happy to look young. 😂
I get that same issue. Initially thought it was cool but now feeling weird about it. I'm 37 and people think I'm 25 or 26.
It’s absolutely inappropriate that they ask. I am used to people just looking at me funny but not directly asking my age (instead, asking proxies like my class year or how long I’ve been with the firm). However, now that I’m a mid level and knowledgeable in my practice area, I have found it doesn’t bother me that I look young or that I feel like people are looking at me wondering how young I am anymore. They’ll take me seriously regardless as soon as I’m giving them advice. That said, I’m in big law and I’m never giving advice alone - always with a partner - so maybe I have the luxury of not worrying about that whereas others might not.
That was my first thought. How is that not a discrimination red flag?
I wish I had that problem. I’m 27 and people tell me I look like I’m 34 (including guys on dating apps) and assume I’m a partner or senior associate. I’d love to look young
You can look younger ponytails and buns with curls in the front give a younger look
Dress older + glasses, maybe? Also, tone of voice makes a difference too. I have the opposite problem so I'm jealous!
I get the same, I am 44 now and still get the same. No way are you in your 40s. It was really bad when I was in my 20s and 30s. I was still getting carded in my 30s.
