People in my company schedule in person meetings at 8AM. I feel it’s too early. I need to wake up at 7 to reach office by 8. I have worked for numerous companies but never worked for any company which schedules early morning in-person meetings. The earliest I ever had a stand up meeting was 10 AM. 8 AM feels too early to me. Am I overthinking or is 8AM really too early to schedule in person meetings? I don’t mind 8 AM zoom calls as I can take it from home but being in the office by 8 feels lot.

8am in person meetings were not too early in many fields before the pandemic. Schoolchildren are typically in class in person at 8am too.

But if that's your line in the sand, you're free to pick it, but there is a good chance that you will look lazy or not fitting in with a hardworking or early-rising culture.

Most of time people are judge on small insignificant things like this and not on their actual work

I shake my head. I'm sorry, I won't sugar coat things for you or coddle you. You lack grit. Get up a little earlier. Then you'll be at work, WORKING, at 8am. Problem solved. Stop whining.

What a load of nonsense! Productivity is unlocked when people get to work on their optimal rhythms and we all have different circadian clocks!

Say what???!!! really? no disrespect.
Unless you have duties as a caregiver (as I do) I would say it may be hard from time to time otherwise you need to comply with what the company needs you for.
Sometimes I only get 3 hrs sleep but I am there at 5 am and take care of the meeting pass-downs and begin taking care of equipment.
If not, there is always the door....

Aren't you getting paid for it? You do have a choice and if you think it's wrong for getting up so early maybe you should say something but be prepared there is always someone who will be willing to do it.

It all depends on the company culture and if your company has specified work hours. If you are supposed to be there at 8, you really have no excuse not to attend a meeting at that time. If the company has flex time, you still need to observe cultural norms. A while ago I worked for the government alongside a lot of military personnel, and the norm was to show up for work before 7:00. An 8:00 meeting was already the middle of the day! If you can't deal with this and it is the company culture, you should consider working somewhere else

Early morning and late afternoon meetings -- unless planned specifically with all participants -- are considered poor professional etiquette for many, many years in the places I've worked. In a couple places, we had core hours during which people were expected to be available for meetings. This was to accommodate people in different time zones as well as those who prefer to start and end their days either earlier or later than most people.

There are a number of ways you can address this issue. First and probably best to talk to your coworkers and suggest different meeting times, at least when in-person meetings are needed. A way to explain that is "I'm not really a morning person, so I prefer to use that time for lower priority tasks." If you're not comfortable being direct in that way, you can play defense instead, and just block time on your calendar during those hours -- if people are ignoring your calendar and scheduling things anyway, that's another problem. If they do that, or if you want a different (more passive aggressive) approach, any time you get a meeting invite for before 9:00 or 9:30, decline and propose a new time of 4:30p or 4:45p (I think you said people like to get in early and leave early?) And maybe schedule your meetings late in the day until they get the hint.

Blocking the time on your calendar is the best way to go. If someone ignores it, you can decline the meeting since you already have work planned during that time. It doesn't have to be a meeting. You can reserve time for catching up on emails, or other low-priority and/or mindless work -- which is smart if you're not your sharpest during that time, as is typically the case for those who are not morning people.

I agree with your points and usually I do that. But it can be hard when the person organising these early morning in-person meetings is someone in a high leadership position and mostly they are the ones doing this because they are super busy during other times and it’s mostly the leadership that asks people to be in the office. And nobody in my team likes to challenge someone in such a high position, which is understandable.

I've been on multiple projects that have 8AM stand up meetings. Usually the schedule is dictated by openings in the calendars of resources in high demand so it's really hard to get their time. I'd say, pray to the God that your employer prays to in stuff like this. Personally, I prefer meetings no earlier than 8:30 so I can get settled in first... but I'm not going to tell my employer that I'm not available, in person when the work day starts.

Overcome and adapt..I can to 3am if necessary.

like

What time zone are you in? And what time zone is the majority of the team in?

That’s really frustrating! Argh

I agree that they are brutal, but the thing is that we work for a company and unless you are really high up to change the ways of working, you just have to put up with it or find a company that clearly fits your style of working

With many companies trying to force RTO, this sounds like a new manipulative way to ensure everyone is there by 8.

If this is during your companies work schedule then no it is not to early. I have worked from home for over 20 years and if a company that I work for calls for an in person at what ever time. I am there, because working from home is privilege and not a guarantee.
That being said if that is not your normal working hours by your contract or understanding with manager than you should have a conversation with your manager about it.

Now you know how i feel about meetings after 4pm. Personally, i would prefer meetings at 6am vs 4pm but to each their own.

I would love to be able to get up at 7 and be in the office physically at 8am so you have a luxury. I know of a lot of people looking for work in this economy that would accommodate. Might be worth a discussion with the scheduler.

Having meetings first thing in the AM is normal. Get up earlier. I've had to coordinate global work as early as 5am and as late as 12am. A good life habit is to get up early every day. 7am is not early. Want to succeed? get up at 5-5:30, prep for your day, make it a habit. Bring your A game every morning.

If your company offers flextime roughly 7a to 6p, 9a to 3p is considered core hours for which everyone should be available. However, I hate when people schedule lunchtime mtgs.

Depends on the company culture. In my last job, my team was in the UK so I'd start meetings at 7 (not in person) but then I couldn't schedule anything after lunch.

I mean if you don’t need to talk you could just listen in while you commute. Or take the call at home and come in after. But if you’re absolutely required for the meeting I think it’s fair to suggest moving it so you can be a better contributor to the discussion. Is it that early? For global and financial institutions, no. But you deserve to live life on your terms

8:00am is pretty routine. Be thankful you don't have colleagues in Asia to accommodate.

I personally have mine at 9:00 (CST) because I have team members in PST (7:00) and EST (10:00). If the workday is 8-5 then it is not unreasonable to expect the team to be in and ready to work at that time. My third grader is at school by 7:30 and in class at 7:45. It's not that tough.

Could be worse...my brother sometimes has to be in Zoom calls at 3 am because he is working with groups in India, where it is mid-afternoon.

I believe if a meeting needs to be scheduled so early, it should be a virtual meeting, some people have families to take care of, kids to drop off to the school. It is not possible to drop off kids at same time and reach at office. We are humans, we are not robots, that we will get up and just got to office, we need to do house hold chores, get ready, pack lunches for kids and family, drop kids, then commute to office. If a person is living far, he would require even more time to commute. There should be flexibility to join calls which are top early in the morning. I remember, in my past company, I had to join a call at 7 AM just because we had to collaborate with offshore team, while I was on call, I was making lunch for the kids too. This is too hectic.

Lot of fear in the market right now (understandably so). The situation in Ukraine is awful and the potential consequences are scary to think about.

There are some who want to sell in fear of their investments falling further. Do not do this. Hold and continue to buy more. Continue your 401k contributions, and add whatever you can afford after every paycheck into your brokerage. Those who sold the covid crash were often late buying back in.

This is the dip you're worried about.
