People in my company schedule in person meetings at 8AM. I feel it’s too early. I need to wake up at 7 to reach office by 8. I have worked for numerous companies but never worked for any company which schedules early morning in-person meetings. The earliest I ever had a stand up meeting was 10 AM. 8 AM feels too early to me. Am I overthinking or is 8AM really too early to schedule in person meetings? I don’t mind 8 AM zoom calls as I can take it from home but being in the office by 8 feels lot.

8am in person meetings were not too early in many fields before the pandemic. Schoolchildren are typically in class in person at 8am too.

But if that's your line in the sand, you're free to pick it, but there is a good chance that you will look lazy or not fitting in with a hardworking or early-rising culture.

Most of time people are judge on small insignificant things like this and not on their actual work

I shake my head. I'm sorry, I won't sugar coat things for you or coddle you. You lack grit. Get up a little earlier. Then you'll be at work, WORKING, at 8am. Problem solved. Stop whining.

What a load of nonsense! Productivity is unlocked when people get to work on their optimal rhythms and we all have different circadian clocks!

I get that, I have been in companies that I had meeting starting 6:30 and 7am.. for FinTech companies, because they have teams internationally. In many industries, 8 AM in-person meetings are not the norm. Most teams start around 9 or 10. If it feels like a strain, it is valid. You might not be alone, and it could be worth gently bringing it up with your team.

I live on the west coast and when east coast staff schedule a 8 AM meeting, it is 5 AM my time. Even Meetings that start at 9 AM or 10 AM are too early on the west coast. I usually reply and remind them that there are many west coast employees and they need to keep that in mind when they schedule calls. I would not schedule a 3 PM West coast call with them, they should be home eating dinner. :)

like

8:00AM seems reasonable to me for a meeting. Is it within the official working hours? If yes, it seems totally fair.

like

You can wake up at 7 and be in the office by 8? That sounds awesome. My commute takes at least 35 minutes, and that's an easy one. Plus I have to get people in my house moving. You've got it easy.

likesmart

Uh what? Bacon sandwich then. I don’t care. The point is that it’s not your employer’s job to feed you. If your job doesn’t give you enough hours in the day to literally eat food, then it’s time for another job.

This was normal before the pandemic. 10am is mid-morning already.

likefunny

You’re right, it depends on the company — and this was a company that scheduled an interview with OP at 8am. Their mistake was assuming that was a one-off rather than part of their culture/core hours.

You start getting paid at 8am. Put your big boy pants on and be ready to work at 8am.

like

That is a totally dismissive response. I would hate to work for a manager like you. People have different ways of being productive. I personally get my most productive work done first thing in the morning. I dislike starting my day with a meeting (which, tbh, are generally unproductive). A good manager would understand how to work with someone to help get the most productivity out of them. (And that doesn’t appear to be you.)

likehelpful

I’m at work by 6, I just go to bed earlier, are they scheduling meetings till 10pm too or something?

I typically have mtgs every morning at either 8 or 8:30 and I typically take them while I am driving in. Very infrequently do I have to actually attend an 8am call in person, which is helpful. With that said, I have call nearly every evening as well (Sun - Thurs) as half my team is in India. Those calls are typically in the 9-11pm range. I try to leave the office somewhere between 3-4pm. It helps me miss the heaviest part of commute traffic and I get to spend some time w/ my wife before jumping on a call. Some days are insane, others peaceful. Luckily, I have an employer than completely understands

like

Here within lies one of the issues with onsite work versus remote. As a remote employee I was fine with 8 calls (and I had customers on the ET while I was not, as well as customers in India and Europe so I sometimes had to take calls at 7am. ) But if you can put a sweater and makeup on in a few minutes, take dogs out quickly and then get the rest of the day prepped after the call from home (I would block out my time after the call) then it's doable. If you have to commute to get there, not so much, especially if you are any type of care giver (children, parents, pets...) or have a long commute.
A few questions to help:
1. Is this an internal mtg? Are these people hard to schedule at other times or do they need the info at the start of the day to get things done?
2. Can you turn the tables and propose a time at the end of the day? I feel that corp America doesn't understand that people have different circadian rhythms and priorities.
3. Can you block your time out to show you are in office from 9- (end time that matches) and show that as available by phone or zoom only?
Good luck.

Exactly. My work hours are 8 to 5. We get 1 hour lunch time but people still schedule meetings during lunch time. I hardly get the time to eat lunch which means I end up working 9 hours a day and then 2 hours of commute(AM and PM). The thing is my company has an early morning culture where everyone else seems to be fine with early morning meetings. Maybe it’s just a small town thing. When I worked in big cities, 10 AM was completely normal to start meetings if everyone was in the same time zone. People here schedule meetings as per their convenience. It doesn’t matter to them that I am not a morning person. I don’t have many meetings scheduled during the afternoon and that’s how it is for everyone else. Back to back meetings from 8 to 11 and then it slows down after that. When I am organising a meeting, I like to keep it at 11 AM or later.

like

Wahhh........me and many others would love to have that problem. Always keep in mind that your gripes are another person's blessings.

@OP — I agree with everything you’re saying here and I’m not a morning person myself. But it seems like you took a job and relocating without realizing that their view of work schedules doesn’t align with yours. If flexible work schedules are valuable to you, you should discuss and negotiate them before signing, not trying to push back against company culture once you’re in.

From what I’m seeing in your comments, you’re pushing against both a heavy in-office culture and work hours. You may win one or two battles, but at the end of the day, you’ll find there’s a limit to your ability to get the established culture to accommodate to you. Imagine if you had the ability to set core hours and had a company where 10am and later meetings were the norm, but someone else came in and said as the new guy “Hey, I find I work best when I align with everyone first thing, so can we do our standup at 8am?”. That’s the position you’re putting your new colleagues in when you make the “no meetings before 10” request.

If hours mean this much to you, you may want to start looking for a different company, sorry to say.

I generally think of 9 am as the earliest time for a meeting. But I guess it depends on what the company norm is. Some places get an early start for whatever reason. I would suggest mentioning that 8 am seems pretty early and at least bring it up. Perhaps there's some reason why it's held then.

like

I once worked for a company that started the day at 6:00 am. Once promoted to Admin Asst. Often had to stop for coffee, donuts, bagel, etc. If you like your job, you make adjustments and learn to manage your time effectively. Add a 45 minute one way commute (on clear weather days), on snowy or heavy rain days add an additional 30 minutes) to that commute timing. 8:00 am meetings were usual and tardiness was frowned upon. On the good note you missed the heavy traffic going and coming. Sometimes you have to do what you NEED TO do, to keep your job. The job lasted 4.5 years. ( It started as a 3 month short term temporary position that parlayed into a FTE. )

Somebody needs their beauty sleep. Call the Whambulance! You have a job to do. Just get on with it and stop whining.

like

Gross. I sell enterprise. 8am is fine, we make enough, but usually remote

As Product M I feel we sign up for the things like crazy hours meetings - I just had one at 2am this morning to suit a busy customer, and that will happen every fortnight. That obviously depends on your work arrangements, and previously agreed ways of working in your organisation, but in a post COVID world I expect every meeting to cater for remote/hybrid attendence.

There are other things you can do if your org is not there yet on ways of working catering for remote/hybrid work. I block my calendar with OOOs or Focus time that will automatically decline meetings at times that I need to get things done - and protect my most productive hours like a hungry hyena would a carcass!

like

Seriously? Being in the office by 8am feels like a lot? I’ve been showing up and in my desk by 8am since kindergarten. I mean it wouldn't be my preferred time for a meeting as I do like to have my coffee and read my email first but being in the office by 8am is pretty standard anywhere that I have worked. Hell, when I was in the Army, we had an "in person" meeting every damned morning at 0630 hours for PT. And you better be there 15 minutes early. For years when I went into the office, we had an in person Daily Operations Review Meeting every morning at 8:30am. Not quite 8 but you had to be there early enough to check your email and find out what was going on for the day and maybe prepare something if you had to present at the meeting, so you still had to be in the office by 8. I work from home now for a global company and I'm in Mountain time zone, so we have meetings at all sorts of crazy times for me - 5:30am-7:30am because it's the middle of the day for people in Europe and the end of the day for people in India. Fortunately, those meetings aren't in person but they're still damned early.

like

Do you get to leave an hour earlier on those days? I would adjust my schedule if I was required to start earlier than the norm, I do the same if people schedule meetings during lunch time. If they cannot respect boundaries, I will not work overtime.

likesmart

Leaving earlier is usually not a problem. It’s just that all the meetings start so early even though everyone is in the same time zone. EST

In corporate with no front line impact, your feeling are valid. If you are supporting Ops or work PST vs your team/org working EST it does not

like

Everyone in my office works in EST. It’s an on-site role and they don’t hire remote so basically everyone is in the same time zone.

Nothing wrong with 8am meetings if that is part of the company culture.
I agree with the whole culture of bringing people back to the office, at least for the most part.
It's proven that there is more teamwork when you engage with each other face-to-face.
