Walkable isn’t really a thing in LA like it is in other cities. I just moved here and that’s been my biggest frustration. I suggest Venice/Marina Del Ray
Silver Lake, Los Feliz, Atwater Village.
Otherwise, Santa Monica if you can afford it.
Downtown, Koreatown, Swatelle, Palms, Culver City, and the Fairfax/Mid-City Miracle mile area.
Santa Monica is the most expensive neighborhood, but it’s also rent controlled.
I’d check out Mid-Wilshire, OP. You should be able to find a decent 1bedroom for $1500-1600. Walking distance to groceries, gyms, the grove, and close enough to restaurant row. Anything around El Rey theatre is great. Zip code is 90036
Thanks for all these suggestions! Joining that FB group now
OP, D1 and C2 practically discovered LA yesterday judging by their responses. Their options are going to be the highest end of the rent spectrum.
Well I did say I just moved here. I live in Venice and pay less than the comparable apartments I was finding in Culver City.
Pasadena 🙌🏻
OP, what’s affordable to you? And what amenities do you need? (E.g. are you comfortable living without insuite laundry or onsite parking?)
Fair point, C2. LA is massive and has many hidden gems. Many newbies end up in the westside solely because the NYTimes did a lifestyle piece about it one time.
Koreatown
Isn’t DTLA the higher end of the spectrum too though? I heard good things about Atwater, Koreatown and Swatelle so nice to see that validated.
I’d like to keep rent and utilities <2000. Ideally $1700 but that could be a stretch. I need laundry onsite but not parking...more important is the right neighborhood.
Suggestions on what apps/websites to use to find apartments?
Use Facebook. LA area housing should be a Facebook group. It's a little better than Craigslist, in my experience
Where are you based now? Why LA?
Request to join LA housing group on Facebook- there’s always some great housing opportunities getting posted on there
If you're willing to have a roommate, DTLA has plenty of options that will fit your budget. Even nearby the Staples Center and all, I know people paying around 3000 total for a 2bd/2ba. I don't have a car and have gotten around via metro, lyft, and walking with minimal issues
