Download the Shaka app - it’s the best $10 we spent for road to Hana. It guides you to every spot, tells you which ones are worth doing vs not etc.
I def recommend doing the quick detour for aunty Sandy’s banana bread, it’s very cute!
Yes the Shaka app was a life saver

I personally thought RTH was overrated but I’m still glad I did it atleast once. The only stops we did were banana bread, black sand beach & Haleakala NP. I would probably skip Haleakala cause we did the pipiwai trail and definitely very muddy/could be slippery. Black sand beach was definitely worth seeing.

Highly recommend going in reverse and getting on the road first thing in the morning. You’ll hit a bit of traffic early but will eventually shoot past everybody else and have the rest of the day with a much smaller crowd.
Agree with E1 that the Pipiwai trail might be muddy depending on the recent rain and the Ohe’o Gulch pools are closed indefinitely, so your drive may not need to go all the way out to this part of Haleakala (I do recommend going to the volcano peak part of Haleakala, but that is likely a separate day). First stop might be Wailua Falls before working your way back.
Waiʻanapana State Park has the black sand beaches, but make sure you reserve in advance as availability fills up.
Also recommend the Garden of Eden (pricey, but large) or the Keanae Arboretum (free, but much smaller)
Thanks!
Try and find/hire a local to drive you. It’s an extremely windy road with lots of bridges that are only wide enough for a single car. Flash floods are a thing. Hire a local.
i used the gypsy app and it was great! I would skip the ones in the beginning that require parking or entrance fee (like Garden of Eden). Make sure to book ahead for the black sand beach (it starts with W, wainapa something)
