Ey1 I think your wrong on the U.S.MD role. That role was created as an interim steppingstone to equity partner. At least for KPMG
True only for KPMG in the U.S. MD as a step to partner was formally created in 2009 or 2010 at KPMG. Previously it used to be a destination similar to other firms. Today in advisory, one has to be a MD for couple years before making a partner.
The AP role can be stepping stone or destination depending on team/country/practice; as I understand it, it is used widely in EMEIA, but not in Americas. Some countries still have Executive Directors as well as APs/EPs. So super important to understand what it means for the practice you are joining and getting a commitment to timing/expectations to get to EP if that is important to you.
Thanks!
Yes lateral moves as equity partners are possible. If you are not already an equity partner u need to push the envelope on this for them to bring u in as one. Otherwise your are talking a few years min to make equity partner if not longer.
An Associate Partner in the UK is the equivalent of a Managing Director in the US. In the US, a Managing Director is a destination role; not a path to equity partnership (except sometimes in the case of direct admits, which sounds like your situation). Definitely ask the question in the interview process though, because it’s possible the internal pipeline of senior managers is long and it might not be the intention to get you to equity partner. Depends on service line also.
This is exactly what I needed to know, thank you. Will be sure to ask.
What is associate partner at EY? I dont believe there is any such designation atleast in the U.S.
BDO1 - yes
No non-equity at big 4 in the US, but low(er) equity does exist.
