Any word on layoffs at JPM?
I was in the final stages of an interview with Microsoft two weeks ago, in partner marketing. Then the recruiter told me they were putting the hiring process on hold to assess the need for the role. Well, then we heard about Microsoft layoffs last week. Seems like most were in Xbox and Project Alpha but there’s not a lot of information out there. Should I hold out any hope that I’m going to get this job? Any insights on how much these layoffs have impacted the marketing org and/or new hiring?
December layoffs anywhere?

OP: my unpopular opinion is that ‘you’re a little too insensitive’ - to be posting this at times when people are getting laid off.
Thank you!!
OP you completely missed my point. Discuss this topic in August. Not right as people are getting laid off. This shows you lack a degree of empathy.

Ummm, these layoffs are due to COVID and not pure performance
Yes it does. But what percentage of overall layoffs, let’s say, in the existence of corporations, has been due to COVID?
Being honest and direct is more likely to limit your career than progress it
Corporate world pushes honesty and transparency, but many that get to the top may just be the best at faking honesty

As you progress in your career you will better understand that layoffs have mostly to do with business performance and far less to do with top performers.
You will also see that people who excel at early points in their career may be absolutely horrible as they progress to more senior levels.
May the odds be in your favor OP, but boy did you just mess with karma.
Appreciate the wisdom. And that’s why the post specifically addresses that it’s good “for firms” (aka business performance).
And I see where you are coming from. I know people who are promoted for being fantastic in their senior roles, but are less equipped when placed into a managerial position.
The offended replies in the post prove that my opinion is indeed unpopular.
An employee can be let go while he/she is productive. It’s just that some may not want to settle for good when there’s great out there.
And I see on a human level how much it sucks for that individual and her family that depends on that income. That’s why the view is that it’s good “for firms” on a business level. I understand that it’s being hyper-rational and also why it is unpopular

Murderer!!! 😢
That an opinion is unpopular has no correlation with its validity.
Popular opinion: I can agree with that

Hate you too! Kidding. Actually.
Hope you’e having a great week and that your job is safe.
Layoffs often lead to lower morale. That’s not good for firms. So your argument isn’t solid.

This true. Top performers leave when layoffs happen because their skills will be in demand. All you are left with is low morale and medium performers who lucked out because others left.
Top performers definitely abandon ship when layoffs brew. Post lay-off orgs have lower morale, more work for those who remain (translating to lower quality or burnout), and loss of institutional knowledge.
Cases study show strong talent-driven orgs attempt to bring everyone together, acknowledge challenges ahead to hold all to a higher raised bar, and let voluntary attrition shake out the lower performers.
I do see the link between the burn-out from the lack of load management. That’s a great point.
But couldn’t go the other way? “As long as I have work, and I’m valuable, they can’t fire me?”
Or is it, “I deserve better, and as a high performer, I know I can get a job anywhere?”
It’s ironic how everyone is commenting how bad layoffs are when a lot of consulting performance improvement/diligence work involves laying people off, closing branches and moving operations to lower cost areas.
Again, it seems like someone is bad when it’s happening to you personally versus when it’s happening in general
“BUT WHAT ABOUT THE PEOPLE OP?? Have you no heart?” No, I do.
That’s why it’s phrased “layoffs are good FOR FIRMS,” not the people or (in terms of refutable opinions) the world in general.
Firms need average talent sometimes to grind through work that top talent sees as tedious. Also firms need capacity to take on new jobs when the economy revives.

Oof
COVID is good for the economy and a net positive for the world. Save costs on paying pensions and retirement funds for old people who die from it. Allow for rethinking of old healthcare systems that do not scale well, increased focus on infectious disease research.
It’s been absolutely revealing how much of the world’s supply chain is dependent on China. It’s good that we have been force to re-evaluate our dependence and sourcing.
Unpopular opinion: I don’t find Kelly that attractive. I don’t get why people do. Seems like one of those women that only other women say is attractive. 🤷🏿
