Damn was the hooker included?
It depends if it's the hotels fault or not. If it's weather related tough to blame them. Otherwise, you should be able to get 5k min. Depends on your status too obviously, and if you're a regular of that place.
@PWC - Beaver Creek. I'm using points for this room, and was upgraded... But future weekends have the room I'm in at $820. I'm thinking I can get 3k points back - the standard amount of SPG Goodwill points.
Don't feel bad about asking for points. If you're paying $749/night I'd ask for 25k

@Acn - this is why I'm struggling.. It is most likely weather related, but why didn't a backup generator kick in? I'm on vacation, so not a regular - but have highest status and the rate for my room is $749 / night. I feel bad asking for points but at the same time it was a huge inconvenience to not have power from 6-9pm. But I realize I can't place full blame on them and am thankful that I wasn't stuck on an elevator during that timeframe like a few poor humans were!
749? Which city?
Yes. 3k is nothing in that situation. There's an art to getting points. First of all, don't talk to the random front desk person. Ask to speak to the platinum manager or front desk manager. And make a case for why it affected your life. (Couldn't watch Netflix...) it's directly proportional to your rate. You can get 20k. My strategy is to see what they offer first. Then push a little more. More than 3k points requires a manager to input it, which is why you need to speak with management directly.
When trying to figure out how many points, I find out what it is for a free night then decide if the issues warrants a free night, or half a night. Or a quarter of the points.
Related. Marriott has a 3x3 matrix of how to handle point requests for errors. One axis is severity. The other axis is like, fault. I can't remember. It's on my phone somewhere.
Email your ambassador. Mine is very understanding abt inconveniences and generous with points
