Most of my friends that went for a 3rd ended up having one spouse that stays at home
My wife stays home; I make $350k/yr; my mom and sister live with us and help a lot - her mom lives with us 6months of the year too; we also have a network of friends that help a lot.
Flexible job and lower COL area.
Due in Oct with #3. HHI is $275k. I’m technically hybrid, but only go into the office 1 day a week (my role is global so going in at all adds no value). Spouse is hybrid 3 days in office. Kids aren’t in daycare but we have use a sitter when we need to and sometimes I just have to catch up on things during off hours. Oldest was in a part-time preschool program at our public school this past year that was $175/month, 3 hours a day then rode the bus home. During those 3 hours the little one napped and I had fully uninterrupted time to work (perk of not being in an office).
The only family help we have is my MIL and she’ll take our 5yo for the weekend every couple of weeks.
tbh though, there were a lot of things we just got REALLY lucky with: (flexible jobs with very family-friendly teams, easy-going kids, a house that we built at just the right time then turned around and refi’d at 2.75%)
It’s still tough sometimes, but those days I just remind myself that it’s temporary.
