I made a similar move, and while the pay bump is real, the hours definitely aren’t 9-5 anymore.. weekends happen, but not consistently. The work can be interesting, especially if you like navigating complex ethics issues. But if work-life balance is key, it might feel like a trade-off. Worth exploring though and talking to lots of people becuase my experience might not be everyone's
Thank you for your response! It’s been so difficult getting ahold of a conflicts attorney. Are you working in a big law setting? How many hours do you work on the average week? Are there any exit opportunities you’ve noticed in the field?
I switched from a local government focused firm to a conflicts role about 9 months ago im big law and I love it. I have a great work/life balance, good salary, and great benefits. I don’t work weekends, but my hours are a little unusual (11am-7pm) but I don’t mind it. From what I understand from my coworkers who have done big law conflicts for a long time, you work/life balance really depends on the firm. If you know someone in the conflicts world, even if it’s a friend of a friend, try to meet with them for coffee or something and get a feel for which firms may be good in your city.
I did not have conflicts experience before taking the job. It seems to be about 50/50 among my coworkers for those who did and didn’t have experience. I got the job through a recruiter.
The 11-7 hours are because I’m covering offices not in my time zone. My firm makes sure someone is online at all times worldwide.
