Hi everyone! How do you manage to read so much with adhd? I find myself to be a slow reader and my reading and writing comprehension is not the best :(

I read aloud so I can focus and sometimes I pace around while I read. You can try this and see if it helps. Oh, I also suggest using apps that read texts aloud if you think you really can't focus by reading.

like

I handle a type of transactional work that has minimal legal reading and writing.

Elder law. Lots of phone calls, less written work (aside from emails).

like

i hyper-focus because i love reading 😂😬

like

yes! it’s gotten worse over the years— or maybe i started noticing my attention has lapsed because I’m more in tune with my mind. But yes, reading on meds is significantly better

I suck at focusing. I got tangled up with this law shit before I realized that I would literally be reading for a living. I f-ing hate reading. I’ve probably only read 5 books in my entire life that I wasn’t forced to read. 😂 I also hate my life because big law ruined it.

like

Try making a to-do list and also plan your breaks. You can use a rule of 30 minutes focus and 15 minutes break.

like

Hyperfocusing is my best friend! It's helpful for actually getting to work but it's a hassle to break out of it when my mind chooses to fixate on procrastinating. Try reading aloud and giving yourself a little treat every few paragraphs.

like

Highlight while I read, take notes in margins, take breaks

I can count on one hand the number of books I have read cover to cover while sitting down. So impossible for me. I am a well-read person because I listen to audiobooks, podcasts, and have a textbook reader that converts text to audio. If something is truly only available in written format, I turn on an ADHD hyperfocus playlist on spotify and time myself to get the dopamine rush.

I was going to say that i have an entire library, and i’ve read 30 pages of each book 😂 because i keep buying them instead of finishing the ones I have already

One of my frustrations with myself (writing it out here so I can work on it) is that I will print out something that I need, such as a traffic collision report. I will read it without actually reading it. This results in spending time without actually retaining info. Does this happen to anyone else? I’ve found that I can actually focus when I truly force myself, but often this happens after I’ve discovered an error or an important piece of information that I should have noticed earlier.

How do you all deal with time management - and specifically time estimate - problems?

I always underestimate how long things will take, both because we ADHD’ers view time differently and because I don’t build in time for getting distracted.

I work with a partner who asks me by when I can get something done rather than giving a deadline. I appreciate the flexibility but I always short sell myself and end up pulling all-nighters to meet my self-imposed unrealistic deadlines.

Should I just quit the legal field?

I have been a paralegal or legal assistant since 2010. I have worked for small and large firms and a TPA. I've worked in L&E, PI, and ID. Billing hours gave me nightmares. Right now I'm in a hybrid paralegal/LA position where I'm responsible for all of the docketing and supporting the managing partner and 1 associate and their 90+ ID caseload. I make a lot of mistakes everywhere I work. I feel so incompetent. Should I just abandon this career path?
