Pros of in house: Better work life balance, opportunity shape the comms strategy of a company vs just execute on it, in-depth understanding of company/brand, visibility, better pay/bonus depending on seniority
Cons of in house: can be boring to work on one brand, slower pace (that can be positive too, I guess), slower opportunity for promotions (fewer levels), pay can be less depending on seniority.
Personally, I love working in house. The pace and culture are just so much better for me. Less toxicity. I’ve learned so much.
Agree with all of this but the pay. I’ve bounced from agency to in house to agency to in house. And in my experience both in my roles personally and with friends in the industry, Is that in house pays way more. All depends I guess.
Cons of agency: poor work-life balance, depending size of the agency the less likely you are to have high visibility or stand out (global agencies you may feel like just be another cog in the machine whereas small and mid-sized agencies you feel more valued), clients run the show and your ideas only make it if the client believes in what you’re selling, you’re pulled in a lot of different directions and are expected to always have the answers, easy to burn out, benefits are better in-house (pay can be but not always)
Pros of agency: lots of growth opportunities, you learn the industry and do more of the work on the agency side (could be a con if that’s not what you’re into), team atmosphere meaning you have an equally equipped team working with you at all times and you always have someone to bounce ideas and strategies off of, opportunity to get some awesome brand experience very quickly, more opportunity to win industry awards (PR awards are credited to agencies, rarely in-house teams)
I’ve been on the agency side 11 years and can say I love it but I’m also not bothered by the long hours. I’ve learned to set and maintain boundaries where I’ve seen a lot of others not feel comfortable to do that.
