If you’re looking to do Status Challenges on AA, read the fine print on partner flying. Typically AA only allows partner flights with BA, JAL, Iberia and Finnair count toward status challenges. My guess is your Cathay flight will not count towards it.
Also, make sure the flight number is that partner airlines flight number, not just operated by the partner. If it has an AA flight number as the main flight number and not codeshare, that won’t credit the special fares way either.
(Cont.) 1. Do these flights credit back to AA the same way as booking direct? 2. Do partner bookings count towards status challenges or does it require to be on AA metal?
Right now I'm looking ORD to HKG for ~$1600 and 7790 miles each way on Cathay Pacific. If my calculations are correct it would net around $3k in EQD (20% of mileage flown) and ~23k EQM (1.5 multiplier for Premium Economy).
Flight loyalty programs accept third party bookings for credit. Hotels do not.
Partner bookings come in at a discount. You can see more on the AA partner page.
Yes unless they specially outlawed it

Am I looking at this correctly?
FYI - this is a handy calculator and I've found it to be very accurate https://cwsi.net/m/aacalc.aspx
