Cover letters are, or should be, required for anyone applying for any role at any level of experience.
Agreed! I am shocked by some discussion on here by (clearly) more junior creatives claiming that covers are taboo. I’m trying to figure out where they got that impression. IMO, if you’re applying to be a writer and DON’T take advantage of every opportunity to write, I ain’t interested.
Damn, portfolio school isn’t enough for you? How much more do these kids need to do just to get an internship or entry level job?
A cover letter is a chance to give someone a differentiating elevator pitch before you have a chance to interview. It's an opportunity, not an onerous hurdle. Especially for copywriters who, ostensibly, ought to have an easier time selling something (in this case, themselves) with words than anyone else in the business.
Tip for juniors: don’t work anywhere that requires a cover letter.
