Yea, that’s probably true. You will find your tribe, keep it up
Find your tribe and keep it up - This is true advice.
Find your tribe. Find and connect with people, workplaces and types of jobs that value experience, and where the hiring mangers are your peers and the expectation for the job isn't imagining this role is for someone in their 20s, 30s. You can also look up "Companies that hire 50+ workers" online to target those companies, for example.
Here's what Ai offers: (Some of these tips are helpful, I thought) Remind yourself of your value and benefits you offer.
1. AARP Foundation's BACK TO WORK 50+ program: Offers free workshops and coaching specifically for older adults looking for employment. (Not sure how many high-paying, high level profession ajobs are here)
2. Networking: Many jobs are found through personal contacts. Leverage your existing network and consider joining professional associations or attending industry events.
3. Resume Optimization: Ensure your resume is up-to-date and tailored to each specific job application, using relevant keywords and focusing on recent achievements.
(And some advise to only list teh last 10 years of experience on your resume, no graduation date from college)
4. Skill Development: Consider taking online courses or certifications to demonstrate your commitment to lifelong learning and stay current with industry trends.
(Cyber security jobs, real estate, teaching, any commission and sales roles, complete Google certifications, for example)
5. Address Age Bias Strategically: Minimize the impact of ageism by strategically presenting your experience and skills, avoiding unnecessary age-related information on your resume, and focusing on your value proposition
Best wishes!
While unfair and extremely aggravating, I’m trying to cut off the concerns that my age brings. I show that I’m up to date, I can still learn new things, and that my experience is a benefit for the role, not a hindrance.
I know the superficial stuff SHOULDN'T matter, but unfortunately it does sometimes. I would recommend (in addition to stay relevant with tech and stuff) maybe refreshing your wardrobe or hair style or glasses. You can go from looking old and stale to wise and hip (even in your 50s) with just a few small changes.
That’s a tough one. Because I know ageism has been an increasing problem today’s job market. Are you sure you’re being rejected because of your age or maybe you’re just not interviewing well in person?
I hear you. I'm 55 and unexpectedly had my role eliminated about 2 months ago, after over 10 years of service and good performance reviews.
I feel like I'm doing what I can, trying to split time between applying with tailored resumes, networking, and I recently started a training course to refresh a skill set I didn't use in my last job. My outlook goes back and forth between optimistic to pessimistic multiple times a day, and it is draining.
I feel like I'm doing what I can, but it just doesn't seem to be getting anywhere yet. I was in this situation 2008, but this seems worse, even when not accounting for my age, which seems to make it tougher.
It seems all we can do is keep at it, and hope for a job market rebound.
