Agreed with A1, this sounds unfair. That’s a lot of hoops to jump through to get credit. Especially given the fact that most law firms have high hours requirements and it can take 1.25-1.5 hrs of work for every hour of time you can enter.
I’ve heard of some small firms doing this, but in my experience, it’s not all that common. Although my experience has been BL exclusively so I may be out of touch with the frequency with which this happens…
Either way, that totally sucks.
Honestly, if you’re pulling those kinds of numbers, just go to BL and get paid for it.
Only our billed hours count (rather than billable). It’s really annoying but we do have lower targets as a result.
Our bonus kicks in at 1200 (although that is a very small bonus). Decent bonus from around 1400-1600, accounting for around 300-400 hours being unbilled for whatever reason
Yeah, that’s a whole lot of b.s. My firm is gross hrs.
Also, client write downs? How much input are clients having into what they are billed at your firm?
I work primarily in ID, and insurance carriers wield a ridiculous amount of control in slashing bills. Happens all the time.

This is pretty normal at eat what you kill firms for mid level and above, some are at least transparent and stop with the 2k hours and simply give you a $ amount . You simply stop working for partners who write down your time. It’s poor management for sure that they have the policy. But hours paid is how they make money to pay you.
Yes, at both firms I’ve been at attorneys and paralegals get credit for everything before write offs. I have heard of it being the opposite though, but only at a firm that rarely had write offs.
