South beach sucks in general. Stay in brickell
South Beach is a tourist trap if you stay at a crappy hotel and hang out on Ocean Drive and Lincoln Road. Not if you want an actual beach vacation and stay at a hotel like the W or Ritz, or even mid beach (where I lived for years and still have a place).
The only thing there is to do in Brickell is dining, shopping, and the pool. Unless you have the funds to charter a boat or yacht. Most people want to go to the beach, in the ocean. And the private beach at the Mandarin Oriental sucks.
OP, you can stay on the beach and then Uber to Brickell or downtown for dinner one night and/ or Wynwood or the Design District. There are also great restaurants on the beach.
Edition is better

Edition isn’t an option. Either W or Ritz
Can’t go wrong with either W or Ritz
OP- stay at the W. Hip, younger crowd, party/lounge scene and still have great service
I like the Setai a bit better. The Edition or Faena in mid-beach are ever better. Or the Fontainebleau if you get a suite.
Wouldn’t stay in Brickell if I was looking for a proper beach vacation.

I should add, I’m getting a great rate at the Ritz and W ($400 per night) so I’m debating between those two. Appreciate the other hotels, but unless it’s $400 or less, Marriott is what I need to stick to.
W for the lounge and party scene
