Salary check - please be realistic here. Major market/HCOL area. Small firm, 10 attorneys. Commercial litigation. 11 years of experience. 1800-1900 hours “expected” but realistically will bill about 2,000 this year. Plenty of weekend work (including in-office meetings and stuff). Plenty of long hours into the late evenings at least 4-5 times a month. Usual hours 8:45-6:30. $190k base, bonus usually $15k or so. Quality of life isn’t great, highly stressful work.

I don’t mean to be rude but, unless you are not a great lawyer, this sounds severely below market.

I don’t think there is such a thing as “market” for a 10-person firm. You could have wildly different revenue amounts in the same city depending on your practice area, clientele, etc. that will dictate comp.

like

What’s your hourly rate? For such a small firm your comp doesn’t sound crazy low to me because I assume your rate is low too, but I could be wrong.

Can’t tell you without knowing your hourly rate

I’m at $350 for 1500 hours PT BigLaw for comparison. Similar experience level.

A2- What’s your take? Bonuses aren’t baked in, but modest ones are common. I’m on a team that can’t bill premium rates. Working from home full-time is priceless to me, personally.

What would you expect to see?

Does anyone have any advice on how to deal with discrimination as an Asian in the workplace? In my company it seems like it’s a white boys club where and they just promote white ppl because they’re white. And then they have a lower bar for promotions for minorities (traditional minorities likes Hispanics and African Americans). Meanwhile they make Asians do all the work. I am not generalizing that this is how it is everywhere but it definitely is that way in my workplace. Any advice?

Working at a boutique transactiona firm. First year did not receive much guidance and made a few errors, one of which could have been a deal but ended up being fine but overall I worked hard, billed hours above target and showed a willingness to learn. Three main partners in the group. I feel like I may have been written off by the one partner, still get a fair amount of work from another and the third has never really given work but has a rep for doing things alone or using seniors. Bit of a niche topic: I’ve been in TS/SCI processing for a Science/Tech/Weapons analyst position with the CIA for 3 yrs since I finished grad school in chemistry, but CIA positions are sort of set it and forget it since they can take so long. I’ve since been focused on a Patent Attorney track and am with a firm that will support me taking the patent bar/law school. If I get through processing and go to the CIA for some time, do you think would I be accepted back into patent law later on?

I’m not naive or fresh out of law school, but I’m at a point where I’m saying to myself “Why can’t I have it all?” I’ve been offered a job for more pay and less hours and I keep thinking to myself, what’s the catch? I know people will say no promotion potential or that’s not how it works…but what if it could? What if you make yourself valuable by still setting your boundaries? Why would we resent someone who has that opportunity?

I recently had a specialist partner send me a fairly nasty email after I (a transactional first year) was told to ask them to review something ASAP that had clearly been on my partner’s radar for over a week. Why am I taking the (honestly justified) blame for this? Surely it should be obvious that I’m just the messenger here.
