Did that a couple of times (sabbatical after 2 years at one of the large SI partners, then mat leave about 8 years after being back, both roughly a year long).
I also took long periods off work to travel (talking 6-8 weeks) a few times along the way.
No, your skills don't get outdated, yes recruiters will understand if you are good at what you do and clear as to why you paused and why you want back in.
Didn't slow me down, never felt judged for it. Probably wouldn't have lasted 13 there without these steps back either.
If you have the courage to step out of your routine, you will be rewarded. Fortes fortuna juvat!
Respectfully, Salesforce dev is one of the best WLB jobs in the space. I’m not sure what else you could do in the same space that’s less of a grind.
I would not quit in this economy - it’ll be hard for you to find anything with how oversaturated the market is with over qualified candidates. Agreed with the above - I’d take all your vacation + sick days and/or try for short term disability leave.
I mean, I definitely wouldn't want to be out of a job for too long, but sometimes you have to make decisions that don't necessarily make financial sense for the sake of other aspects of life. Do you have any savings? What's your safety net like, family and stuff like that?
In this market, I would not quit without another job lined up, and if you do, you really need to be thinking about how you will explain the gap. “I took a sabbatical” can work if you have 10yoe, but is less credible with only 4. You don’t want employers to 2nd guess you and assume you got PIPed.
You could quit, and move to Thailand? Or Vietnam? You could live a long time on some savings in place like that… take the time and recharge, and then come back stronger
