Second year associate defending a depo against a senior partner who is notoriously rude, bordering on unprofessional. Any tips on dealing with this dynamic?

Remember that it takes both parties to go off the record and only 1 to go back on. If they are acting like a jerk, keep them on the record and make your objections when necessary. Most importantly, make sure your client is comfortable, prep them to handle OP's behavior, and hopefully the depo moves along.

Note your objections and advise the judge will rule on whether it proper’s so let’s move on to the next question.

Yep. Don’t get flustered and tell them to pound sound. I always like to throw in the “you’ve been doing this much longer than I have, act like you know the rules.” Little spicy but backs them off.

Also say something like: "Counsel, I understand that you're vigorously representing your client but I have been nothing but civil during this deposition, and would ask you to do the same." They are likely to go off at that. Oh well. Make your record. :)

Need advice. Very Shy guy and girl, met a while back for a side hustle both like each other a LOT, relationship has progressed in other areas but not in the physical realm, primarily because neither officially asked the other out. Guy is a very rough around edges, asked for a date by saying ‘anytime you need breakfast or lunch, let me know’. I am an independent gal and didn’t like the way it came across. I really want to take this forward but am out of ideas on how to make a date happen.

Can personality make up for work product? I’ve worked on two matters with a first year that multiple partners have referred to as a “superstar.” Their work was just fine on both matters and downright wrong on certain issues/points. I’ve definitely been more impressed by other first years in this class. However, this first year is incredibly outgoing and some would probably consider them “charming” (comes across as a borderline sociopath imo). Could that be why partners think so highly of them?

Any Atomic Habit readers here? I’m brainstorming identity-based habits for two things I want to change:

-I want to bill more hours, so my goal is to become the type of person who bills at least 8 a day
-I want to drink less alcohol, so my goal is to become the type of person who drinks occasionally

Neither of these feel that helpful. Any one have suggestions for other identity-based goals that get at these changes I want to make?

How do you bill your time? The busier I am the harder it is to bill. How do people actually bill contemporaneously in detailed terms when you bill 12 hours but literally did 100 different things in those 12 hours. And it’s never slow enough to go back and do it super detailed.

Everyone seems to think that their task is more important than an actual closing. Advice?

First year associate and I may barely hit 1500 this year. Requirement is 2000, though i know first and some second years at my firm don’t hit it.

I am a in a small specialist group who has 2 partners, and they both give me work. One of them said to not worry about my hours (though they do not know how low of a number i’m projected for). Haven’t asked the other.

Should I be concerned?

“Keep costs down”???? I am happy to keep costs down by not working on this ducking matter anymore. Maybe stop saying yes to matters that are too small to justify our rates and staffing an expensive senior person on them when you’re already dying trying to get anything staffed.
