Hi, I have an upcoming phone interview at Amazon for data engineering role. I feel I have serious lacking in python leetcode, and data modelling/warehousing. I have two options 1) appear and fail 2) ask them to delay by 1 to 1.5 months. I am worried that if I fail they might not consider me again for 6 months to maybe 1 year. If I delay, the position could be closed as it has been open for quite a while. Please advise.

Work sucks everywhere. You are lucky if you at least like who you are working with. That makes going into the office easier. I would stick it out until the people you like break off and then follow them.
For me I didn’t like Staff1 year but enjoyed S2 year (figured it out but still no real responsibility) . I Hated every day as a senior more than the day before... for three long years. Why did I keep doing it? Not entirely sure... but, I have also enjoyed every year since more than the one before.
Like you- I liked my coworkers, liked mentoring people, liked (most of) my clients, enjoyed solving problems and then celebrating the results. I just didn’t like being in the middle of the detailed work I guess, and maybe some of my supervisors... anywho... for me things got better after I became a manager. And I’m now thankful I put up with it then as I now have more time and money at a time in my life that it feels more important now that I have a family
But everyone’s different... my advice to you is to think about what you enjoy doing and what you would like to be doing 10 years from now. Can your current career get you there? You’ll have to make sacrifices to be successful anywhere, but only you can assess whether the pay off will be there for you.
Also, the work got more interesting to me the higher up I went. You won’t be ticking and tying forever. As you gain more experience and progress past the grunt work stage, you will get to use your brain more, be more thoughtful and creative, etc.
Never leave good people by choice.
Look ahead to what your supervisors do. Does that look like it is more fun? Typically things get more interesting the further up the chain you go. If not, time to look elsewhere but maybe start within PWC first. Lots of people move within their firm
Most of the work I do (been at pwc for 2 years) makes me want to play in traffic. I don’t want to leave pwc because I love hanging out with my coworkers, cracking jokes with my managers and my office is second to none. But Is it worth staying in a firm for the long run if you dislike the work?
No. At some point, the shitty work will catch up with you and you will be miserable. Try pivoting to a different group or at least ask for different work at Pwc so you can stay and enjoy the culture and your friends there, but at the end of the day, you are there for work and if you hate that, you will end up hating it.
EY 1, I disagree. Having good coworkers certainly is a huge bonus, but if you hate the work, this is an industry where that’s a bigger issue. None of us work 9-5, so when you’re doing work you can’t stand for a significantly longer amount of time each week, that catches up to you fast. If you still care about the people, and they still care about you, you’ll stay in touch after you’re gone
Is it possible for you to switch to a different service line/work you like more? You can keep your contacts and relationships that you’ve built up and have more cross-selling opportunities later in your career.
And once they leave what are you going to do with a bunch of experience that is not relevant to anything you’re interested in
Switch groups
I’m in tax and I enjoy the work I do and although I adore my colleagues I would seek other opportunities (different LOS or firm) if I didn’t.
KPMG 1 advice is good. Staff work is very dull. It does get more interesting.
I would rather work with people I love and be bored by work, than do work I love and people I hate. I'm personally giving busy season another try, and then leaving if I don't enjoy the experience again. I know I love the work, but I don't like the culture.
Look into Recruiting! Or really other positions that might be available that allow you to stay at PwC, and possibly in your office but don’t require you to still do the work. (Former Tax professional here)
Wow OP you spoke the heart out of me. I thought I was the one that posted! I totally feel the same. Love everything about PwC except audit
