Former agency head, Eli Silberman, used to tell a story from his days as a copywriter at McCann-Erickson. He and an account guy were running late to a pitch downtown. Rushing out of the Sausage Factory HQ on 3rd Ave, they were met by a blast of wind that threatened to turn the huge portfolio case into a sail. Desperate to catch a cab right at the shift-change hour, they were finally picked up. Dropped downtown, they almost forgot the agency reel and had to run after the cab. Finally in the client's building, windblown and sweaty, they boarded an elevator. A few floors short of the client's floor, the elevator stopped and opened, revealing a vast space filled with row after row of steel desks, each with a green-eyeshaded worker operating an adding machine. As the doors closed, the older account guy said to Silberman, "Still and all, kid, aren't you glad you're in our business?"

Team owners should tell athletes this the next time they want more money. 👍

Expect that to happen right off the bat. Just part of the job. Do your best and put real effort into your work, but try to find true meaning elsewhere.
Also, gratitude as an overall outlook on everything is helpful. I'm incredibly grateful to be working right now, especially with how rough it is out there. I've been in tough spots for sure but never in such a horrific market.
But also, grateful for things we tend to take for granted. Like plumbing and hot water. This modern life we enjoy can flip on its head and go to hell very quickly, like on a societal or even civilizational level. It's my biggest fear. So annoying client requests pale in comparison, ya know?

Bleak is right SC1. Are you aware what awful shape our industry is right now? Folks out of work for 12+ months. Imagine how it feels for those with dependents.
I love my job. But it's not like loving a job offers any insulation from being laid off at any moment.
So yeah, I'm super grateful to be employed.

Focus on the check and do your REAL creative work on the side 👍
Know that all campaigns end and there will be others. Nothing is forever. Look for the good in the job. Do you love your team? Did you get to travel somewhere cool? Did you get expensive sushi at the edit? And then go take a walk and try to remember we’re not curing cancer. We’re just making stupid ads to sell stuff.
Learn to enjoy the process, not the result.
Work on side projects that you have complete control over. That usually helps me feel a little better when things go to shit lol
Enjoy whatever you’re doing at the time it’s happening. It will end. Every campaign that you work on will end. Clients will move on and be replaced by another client who will not know you, or will hate what you did for the brand. Worst of all, you will lose your job at some time. A lot of the time it happens when people are doing great work. Boom. Unemployed. So live in the moment. Savor anything that feels even slightly good. That includes enjoying the people you work with. That can and will change, too.
And after you’ve been through a particularly crappy time and then found yourself actually having good days again, you can always tell yourself that the bad times don’t last either. I’ve had some amazing runs of truly happy times. And bad ones. Neither lasts.
