If you have booked travel explain this in the interview.
If you have already agreed to a position they will likely want you to start in two weeks (in-line with giving notice to your current employer).
There is no harm in asking, but maybe think of a better rationale than “I just want to travel a bit first”. This statement shows disregard for their needs within the position you accepted.
If you’re moving to a new city, they should have that time baked into their plans. If not, they’re unrealistic a-holes.
But on the flip side of that, if you’re talking about an extra month to travel...well, it can’t hurt to ask them about the latest possible start date...but if they’re hiring a person, it’s likely because they need this new person’s help.
I've moved states twice for a new job. One month from acceptance was my start date both times.
don't let anyone know shit until you know they want to hire you. that just gives them a reason to not move you along
Make them want you, then once you get an offer and as part of your negotiation, give them your desired start date. ask for six weeks and compromise on a month. you're only asking for two extra weeks, it's not a big deal. but if you ask at the start of the process you risk looking needy and demanding and nobody has time for that shit.
also, and this is the same advice I give for almost every unusual negotiation request, practice it out loud until it doesn't feel weird.
You can ask. If they have an open role you’re filling, there’s a good chance they have you penciled in for projects and need you to start. But maybe they’ll meet you in the middle or give you a week or two.
I've been able to do a month to travel between jobs twice. It's possible.
You can ask for additional time, however, the employer needs may be immediate. Time to get settles, moving etc is reasonable ask. Time to take a trip is not a reasonable ask. The better solution would have been let them know before accepting the position that you are requesting time to (move, get situated etc, including giving notice to your previous place of employment some companies require 2-4wks of notice*wink*wink*)
I'll be sure to do that! (I'm still interviewing places, not accepting anything yet, just prematurely planning)
Ok so you make them want you, say you want six weeks but really it's to force them to say ok to 4wks... What if they say No? They have multiple candidates that can easily replace the person above. Negotiations are good however you have to be smart and realistic about it.
It's just not a realistic scenario for an extra two weeks. if OP was asking for months, then yes, but not for two weeks. By the time they have gone back to other candidates and negotiated they'd likely be beyond four weeks anyhow. and if you're their #1 choice, they can wait two extra weeks for you.
if they are so breathless and desperate that they can't accommodate a reasonable request to start a little later, then they are a badly run organization and you're better off knowing that early and not joining.
