7th year lit associate at AmLaw200 firm. I’ve applied for several in house litigation related roles but haven’t gotten so much as a screening interview. Even messaged people on Linked In after applying…nothing. I just applied for another and messaged an alum of my law school that has been there 15 years. She immediately responded and agreed to a call. Thinking this will at least lead to an initial interview, right? Any tips as I prepare for the call?

It may not lead to anything but typically contacting people you have some common connection with at the company increases your odds.

I’ve literally had hiring managers reach out to me on linkedin, networking calls with the hiring manager, etc and those still not leading to an initial interview…it’s tough out there. But this alum should be able to give you a referral which would increase your chances of getting past resume screening.

Yes do take the call, and come up with meaningful questions that aren’t just something you could Google so it feels valuable to her time. FWIW in this market hit rates for applications are low so it’s not outrageous to have to apply to tens before anything hits.

Focus on cultivating your underlying friendship, not just jumping into job search requests. In my experience, these types of connections have led to invitations to apply to unposted jobs. But that friendship is what needs to be nurtured over time.

My parents got divorced 6 years ago and my dad kinda gave up on life. His American dream was to graduate with an actuary degree (which he did 2 years ago) and find a corporate job but it never happened...He gave up on life to a point that has no food and is behind rent because he doesn't want to get a $15 an hour job or a maintenance/painting job. He doesn't do drugs or alcohol and my wife is going to kill me if she finds out again that I gave him money again.

For those working in house, how much “from scratch” document drafting are you doing vs. reviewing and revising “outside documents”. For example, if your company wants to enter into a joint venture company with another entity, are you drafting the company agreement “from scratch” or is it based on internal forms? Or are you getting outside counsel to do it?

How far do you require depts be with negotiating commercial contract terms before your legal review? I’m talking routine low value and risk contracts (e.g., vendor services), where Legal terms won’t kill the deal. My clients blindly forward contracts. Got another perm offer in a different industry for similar salary, but I might have to relocate and I'm concerned the work may involve translation instead of pure legal work.
