Nope - you’re spot on. Don’t let it cloud your judgement. It’s often a tool to get you in with the promise of a raise later. But it may never come.
I’d only take it if the sign on bonus is in addition to a salary you’re happy with. Otherwise to your point - you’re selling your now for a future which may not exist. Plus sign-on bonuses come with terms - so check into that as well.
Found a better paying company and got a job there? Cool! Don’t forget you need to pay back your sign-on bonus because of you were only here 11 & 1/2 months (sad trombone ).

Hard work fast paced low pay
The only time I ever received a signing bonus was with a tough to fill position where I could chose between 2 companies. The bonus was the kicker. Luckily the work environment was good.
