Double down. Tell your bosses’ boss that with all due respect, that Radiation Safety is the job of the Radiation Safety Officer, hence the name. You are entitled to your dosimetry reports. You can ask your RSO perhaps for a “belly badge” you wear under your lead then, to see if you can quantify exposure risk.
So unfortunately speaking up at work isn’t working in my favor…
So, I have now taken matters into my own hands. I have opened a small baking business and I am advertising it around the OR floor and the some other areas of the hospital that I frequently work in.
IMO it’s kinda embarrassing that I have to fundraise to buy my own lead, but so far I have noticed this has raised awareness about the radiology department and their failure to support their techs.
And talk to your accountant and see if you can use it as a tax write off since it is a work related expense.
Hi there! Might be a dumb question, but could a complaint to OSHA help?
Honestly I’m not sure.
Tbh you should try and invest in your own lead anyways. I’ve seen many people end up with either some sort of fungus or rash due to using heavily used lead! That sweat has to go somewhere and it’s likely in the nasty thyroid! Now you can just buy a thyroid and call it a day but in your case you would have to buy the whole thing. I bought my own lead just cause I was tired of using disgusting leads with velcro that didn’t even hang on.

That’s incredibly frustrating! Safety should always come first, and budget excuses don’t cut it. Posting a position but not ensuring proper safety equipment feels like a major oversight. Keep documenting everything and maybe escalate further if necessary—your well-being matters!
Well escalating it is what got me in trouble in the first place
As a former RSO, every employee is permitted to share their concerns directly with the RSO at any time. In fact, your Notice to Employees states that as an occupational worker you have the obligation to bring forward concerns about radiation safety. The RSO is outside of the normal Chain of commend and reports directly to Sr. Admin as outlined in the Agreement Letter where Sr. Admin delegates authority to the RSO.
You could notify your compliance officer and ask for confidentiality. Is there not sufficient lead in the OR to accommodate you? Usually there is a surplus at most facilities.

I don't know if buy my own, and if you do I would send proof of the number of times you requested the lead and that it is a mandatory piece of equipment required for staff safety and you were forced to purchase their own with a receipt attached. They probably won't reimburse you but it makes them all look like butts that you purchased your own
Well, they have told me they will not reimburse me. It’s sad but I have been raising awareness over the entire OR about the situation and a lot of people have donated and bought cookies and sweet treats from my side business so that’s a plus!
